Rajjo movie review: Watch Kangana Come Into Her Own

Rating: 3/5

When Kangana Ranaut gave us that brave interview some time back, we were exposed to someone who had complete confidence in herself and was carving her own niche. Rajjo, seems to be borne of this same confidence Kangana displays in her life, as it tracks the heartwrenching story of a girl tricked into prostitution by her own. Living in the red light district of Mumbai, Rajjo Rani is the most desired nautch girl, or mujrawali, whose thumkas and lachaks drive the audience into wild rapture. Shepherded by the madam of the kotha, Begum (Mahesh Manjrekar) she puts no foot wrong while secretly wishing for a better life and fulfilling her dream of becoming a classical dancer.

Perfectly made up and with a demeanour that makes her the ultimate tease, Rajjo’s life is chugging along on its own rhythm till 21 year old Chandu (Paras Arora) enters the picture. In the kotha for ‘noble’ reasons, Chandu and Rajjo strike up a purely platonic relationship under Begum’s watchful eye but it isn’t long before their relationship progresses to become something more intimate. Into the fray are thrown Prakash Raj, a local corporator, and a few other characters. The promise and positivity of Kangana’s performance unfortunately gets lost in the randomness of the director’s storytelling.

The film lacks coherence which ultimately leaves the viewer feeling like there’s something missing. The dialogues seem to have been written not as much to serve the script but as baits to be repeated. The performances are nearly all earnest with Kangana and Mahesh Manjrekar walking away with the plaudits. Prakash Raj plies his usual trade as a villain, and Paras Arora’s role is quite like filler which anyone else could do. This is an enjoyable watch that doesn’t quite hit the right notes but one that rests firmly on Kangana’s shoulders. We’d recommend you watch it to see how far she has come as an actress and we can’t wait for her career to go up a level.
