The Cartoon Prints That Stole Our Hearts!

When Jeremy Scott brought Spongebob Squarepants to the runways of Milan Fashion Week, the crowds did not hesitate to join in this movement because it spoke of creative audacity. We loved it then and we love it now, in a time where cartoon prints and superhero print clothing has made its way to high street and everyone include our Bollywood glitterati seem to lap it up just as much. This is the perfect idea to add some pizzazz to a regular day outfit.

BC picks its favourite moments starring the leading ladies of Bollywood as they strut their stuff with the likes of Mickey and Minnie.

Priyanka Chopra

2

PC has always made the case for casual chic and this outfit is no different. This comic print shirt from Moschino Cheap & Chic stole our hearts with its sheer innocence. It added this cute girl-next-door charm to her otherwise elegant look. There is something to be said about comic prints in happy colours that do not overpower an outfit.

Sonam Kapoor

3 (1)

As Mili in Khoobsurat, Sonam Kapoor’s character needed every bit of quirk to complete her wardrobe. The ‘Angry bird’ T-shirt she flaunted in the movie with a printed pair of shorts was one of our favourite picks, followed closely by her in the off-shoulders blush pink Mickey Mouse tee for a Khoobsurat photo shoot. Not only did the cartoon print clothing make for the perfect accompaniment to Walt Disney co-producing the movie, it also set the tone for Gen-Y’s fashion.

Tamannah Bhatia

4

Tamannah might be still finding her foothold in the industry but her fashion game has sinuously found itself getting better. During the promotions of her movie Humshakals, she was seen sporting a look we find oh-so-affable. She paired an elegant pencil skirt with a Bart Simpson print tee from ASOS, which made the look so wholesome and cute. Choosing to don a mischievous cartoon print for the promotions of a comedy is a choice we appreciate.

Deepika Padukone

5

It has been a while but this particular sighting of Deepika Padukone at Nickelodeon awards could not have been more befitting. The label ‘Quirkbox’ has brought quirky into mainstream fashion and we love how that has everybody riding the cute, ditsy cartoon print wave. Deepika wore the ‘minion print’ jacket over a classic, svelte black dress and we love how the addition of just that funky print made this look so fun.

Esha Gupta

6

Muscle tees are having their moment in the fashion circuit. Esha Gupta’s rendezvous with Iron Man was very warmly welcomed since the look came together with such youthful candor. No stranger to superheroes, Marvel’s babies are now influencing the way we wear our regular tees. With the Avenger movies being such a hit with the masses, superheroes are not for the purebred geeks anymore.

Parineeti Chopra

7 (1)

Casual sightings of the stars give us a real insight into what they look when not being helped by an army of stylists. Parineeti Chopra gives us a cute sneak peek into her effervescent, fun self by wearing a Mickey Mouse tee with jeans and ballerina flats with complete ease. The look is not one which fashion mavens may take off for years to come but just the Disney print on the tee has us loving her real girl fashion.

Vidya Balan

8

The Kahaani star is known to do complete justice to Indian handlooms and her love for the complete 9 yards is not unknown. With her mature fashion sense, this Disney print saree, which she donned for an awards event from the Satya Paul X Disney collection, came as a breath of fresh air.

Esha Gupta

1

At the end of last year, Masaba Gupta at the helm of Satya Paul gave us a memorable collection of saris – Satya Paul X Disney. Esha Gupta with her slick back ponytail look, in this Minnie-mouse printed sari from the collection teamed it with a full-sleeved sequined blouse. It is interesting to note how the Minnie Mouse print manages to add a certain amount of youthful charm even to a tradition garment like a sari.

Each quirky cartoon print stands for an inimitable mood. Given how each of these stars has inducted these prints in their own personal patent style, maybe it’s time for you to find your own.

The 6 Wackiest Nicknames In Bollywood

We went ROFL when Priyanka Chopra revealed her hilarious nickname on her debut appearance in the Anupam Kher Show. She was called ‘Meethu’ by her family members considering the chatterbox that she was! When she realized that parrots are generally called ‘Meethu’ as they are talkative, she totally disliked being called ‘Meethu.’

Well, even though PC loathed her funny nickname, we totally loved it and this reminds us PC is not the only one with such a wacky nickname. Hrithik Roshan is ‘The Hrithik Roshan’ for his fans but for family and friends he is simply Duggu. Likewise, there are several other stars who have rib-tickling nicknames. Like, literally!

BC looks at who is called what in the industry.

Aloo Kachchalu aka Alia Bhatt

Alia

It’s a known fact that the sizzling girl, who grabbed a lot of eyeballs with her recent bikini scene in Shaandaar, Alia Bhatt was comfortably plump before she entered the industry. She was rotund and the cutest nickname her mom could come up with was Aloo Kachchalu. Her sister called her Aloos whereas some people also called her Batata Vada. Now that she has lost weight she is nowhere near Batata Vada but as we say nicknames stay forever. So, Aloo Kachchalu it is for Alia!

Pappu aka Varun Dhawan

Varun-Dhawan

The most notorious kid on the block is Varun Dhawan. We have heard numerous stories of him donning the hat of a prankster and pulling pranks on his co-stars just like his father. Apart from being a prankster he is also a fabulous dancer. So we wonder why did his dad (David Dhawan) nicknamed him ‘Pappu.’ Even though it’s a hilarious one this ‘Pappu’ can surely dance. In a recent interview, Pappu (Oops, Varun) revealed that his nickname is really embarrassing and it reminds him of a Mexican Drug Lord.

Chirkut aka Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha-Kapoor-posing

Now this one is the funniest of all! Aashiqui 2 girl Shraddha Kapoor has the most amusing nickname and this nickname is given to her by none other than the notorious kid and her ABCD 2 co-star Varun Dhawan. ‘Chirkut’ is the word we’re tripping on. Shraddha and Varun are childhood friends and there’s no doubt that the duo share a great rapport. So much so that he doesn’t miss a chance to take potshots at Shraddha by calling her Chirkut in front of the camera.

Giraffe Lady aka Sonam Kapoor

Sonam-Kapoor

All thanks to her towering figure, daddy Anil Kapoor nicknamed his little daughter Sonam Kapoor as ‘Giraffe.’ Sonam has that magnificent height that every girl would crave for but Anil made fun of her tall figure by calling her Giraffe during her childhood. How adorable, isn’t it?

Nusheshwar aka Anushka Sharma

Anushka-Sharma

In an interview, Anushka Sharma revealed that her parents didn’t give her a nickname as a child but instead her friends picked weird names for her. She is either called ‘Nusheshwar’ or ‘Nushsie’ by her friends.

Raymond Man aka Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir-kapoor

Mom’s always pick up the best things for their kids – including picking a nickname for your adorable one. Mummy Neetu Singh who has always been protective of son Ranbir Kapoor chose an interesting nickname for RK – ‘Raymond.’ She thinks his son is a complete man and that’s what Raymond stands for. RK’s close friends and family members also call him ‘Ganglu,’ a nickname given by his grandfather Raj Kapoor. Interesting!

Babulal Continues To Make India Laugh

Johnny Lever really needs no introduction. India’s first standup comic and one of Hindi cinema’s comedians, Lever is a powerhouse of talent who just keeps getting better with age. As the legend turns 58 today, let’s look at nine of his super hilarious performances that never seem to get old (just like him!).

Baazigar

As the forgetful house help Babulal, Johnny was perfect. This was his breakthrough role in Bollywood and he was no longer an ignorable sidekick.

Karan Arjun

As Lenghaiya, Johnny had 2 tasks in the film – to help Karan and Arjun and to create mischief for Munshiji (played by Ashok Sharaf). The comedian’s pseudo-Parsi accent became a favourite of mimics of those days.

Raja Hindustani

By the time Raja Hindustani came, we were already aware of Lever’s talent. His act as ‘sardarji‘ Balvant Singh, who believes in doing the Bhangra at the drop of a hat, cemented his position as one of Hindi cinema’s best comedians.

Dulhe Raja

Manager Bankhey, forever getting his loyalties and responsibilities mixed up, is easily the most lovable character in Dulhe Raja (sorry Govinda!). This is definitely one of Johnny Lever’s best roles.

Baadshah

Baadshah Bhai‘s trusty sidekick and someone who ensures (well, tries his best to ensure) that no harm befalls his boss, Ram Lal is every detective’s dream assistant.

Hadh Kar Di Aapne

Lever had a double role in Hadh Kar Di Aapne. He played father and son, both lawyers and both with misplaced morals. Do we really need to elaborate on why this was awesome?

Judaai

Three words – Abba Dabba Jabba. Special shout-out to Upasna Singh.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

Let’s face it K3G wouldn’t have been the same without Haldiram halwaai. Despite being around for a very short while, Johnny Lever was unforgettable in the film.

Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega

Was this a good and memorable film? That is a debatable question. What no one can dispute is the fact that Lever’s stint as film-crazy Aslam Bhai is wonderful.

The Jaw-Dropping Jumpsuits

Whether or not you have Kim Kardashian’s bountiful booty or the pizzazz of a Solange Knowles nothing ought to stop you from rocking that beautiful jumpsuit. This piece of clothing popularized only in 2014 sometime, is now almost indispensable to the red carpet or the celebrity off-duty sightings. There in lies the beauty of the garment, we reckon.

The ideal pairing can make it look like a billion dollars and dressing it down can give you the ‘I-woke-up-like-this’ cool nonchalance. It feels odd that a garment that was originally used as a protective covering for skydivers and paratroopers is now the fashion industry’s sweetheart. We love that it can make you look svelte and slim with the right fit and highlight your beautiful décolletage in another kind of style.

Our top sightings from Tinseltown.

Freida Pinto Spells Black Magic

Freida Pinto Spells Black Magic

The Slumdog star in a black belted number by Kate Spade does all kinds of black magic. She follows the thumb rule and you should too. It is all about the fit. The pointy pumps work effortlessly too.

Aishwarya Rai: The Ultimate Sophisticate

 Aishwarya Rai

Mrs Bachchan ushers in the era of sophisticated florals in her Sabyasachi jumpsuit for a UN event. The attached cape like style works to also disguise a bigger upper torso for women who might not feel comfortable in a sleeveless style. The Sabyasachi belt adds the structure to this otherwise loose look and the chain bag lends it the right amount of sophistication.

Fit For Queen

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut’s downtown chic jumpsuit style. This denim jumpsuit by Diesel is great on two counts; wear it with a tee shirt or without. The addition of the cap and the fact that she rolled up the bottom and wore it with tan brogues makes it a very cool choice. Denim never goes out of style.

Kareena Kapoor’s Printed Sophistication

Kareena Kapoor’s Printed Sophistication

This Diane Von Furstenberg printed jumpsuit with the flared bottom looks all kinds of ‘70s cool especially with the deep neckline. Remember to pair your flared jumpsuits with heels only to give them a lengthening effect.

Tisca Chopra Makes Heads Turn

Tisca Chopra

Tisca in Ridhi Mehra’s embroidered perfection. A jumpsuit that could be perfect for a cocktail or a sangeet? You haven’t seen it all till you see how she works this embroidered black beauty into elegance. A sleek chignon or a messy braid, you can work a fusion style of jumpsuit like this with either.

Richa Chadha Goes For Sexy Strapless Jumpsuit

Richa Chadha

If the collarbones or décolletage, if you may, is your source of pride then ditch the sleeves and jackets for a sexy strapless number. Bonus points for keeping it in a block colour instead of prints and pops. Complement it with striped pumps like her or metallic peep-toes.

Anushka Sharma: White Glamour

Anushka Sharma

Anushka picks an asymmetric jumpsuit. This Bhaavya Bhatnagar all white piece is for the fiercely fashionable. Possibly cannot fault this look especially her choice of T-bar sandals and the orange-rimmed sunnies. An asymmetric cut jumpsuit like this in white would work just as well in the day as in the night.

PC’s Laidback Chic

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra’s normcore style. She does worker laidback chic like no other in this linen pale blue Dhruv Kapoor number. Easy to do some layering with a jumpsuit like this if you match it with your jacket and throw it on. Pair it with a cool pair of sneakers or dress it up with those pointy heels to complete the look.

We think this piece of easy, utilitarian clothing is here to stay. Haters be damned, how are you wearing your jumpsuit? Sleek and fitted or loose and bohemian?

27 Sunidhi Chauhan Instagrams You Can’t Miss

When an icon like Lata Mangeshkar calls you the Numero Uno singer of the generation, you’ve got to have a very hypnotic sound and magnificent talent. We’re talking about songstress Sunidhi Chauhan. She has managed to bring a whole generation of music fans under a spell. And with her enigmatic personality she makes for the most-adored singing sensation today.

Part and parcel of the appeal of Sunidhi is her distinctive base voice. It’s pure terrific – almost a low purr. We believe, she put an end to the squeaky era of female singers, thanks to the advent of item numbers in the last decades. As she turns 31, we look at her best Instagram moments.

What better than an adorable throwback picture like this? Now you know, she was destined to sing songs and we were probably destined to dance to her tunes, literally.

An Instagram featuring part-time controversy magnet and full-time Punjabi sensation – Mika Singh. These two are now coaching and judging The Voice India. This duo is definitely a party.

This electrifying picture from one of her live concerts. A potential Mariah Carey in the making, we say.

Who knew she does gym sessions with a rather adorable Aditya Narayan. Generation next bonding with a future icon, we like!

A style quotient that matches every nerve of that rock-star in Sunidhi. Going grunge with knee-torn jeans, a biker jacket and loyal black booties. What’s not to hoot for?

When she posed with style queen Sonam Kapoor and let us know that she does bond over with the best of Bollywood.

In case you wondered if there’s a war brimming between her contemporary, Shreya Ghoshal and her, this picture clears all doubts.

No make-up selfies are now the equivalent of pouts. They’re fun and fearless and a raging trend. Pulling of a Beyonce #wokeuplikethis isn’t easy, Sunidhi does it effortlessly here.

Some serious swag with Shreya Ghoshal, yet again. Here’s us wishing many more years of this untouchable girl-power bond.

Sunidhi thanked her fans for their love and support with this super cute Instagram featuring her Dada Saheb Phalke award.

A powerful throwback picture with Yash Chopra and the ethereal Lata Mangeshkar.

Putting her best foot forward with a Miley Cyrus-esque bob, daring red lips and a stunning selfie to show it all.

En route a shoot, amidst some serious sunshine, Sunidhi pouted for her fans and posted this super casual selfie. Her hand gesture sure resonates with us.

On an apparent day called the Propose Day, Sunidhi posted a selfie where she is seen flaunting her engagement ring given to her by dearest hubby, Hitesh Sonik.

Sunidhi could be swag queen, we reckon. She rocked an orange lehanga despite the very rockstar bob cut and so owned it, makes us wanna hoot some more.

A candid selfie with her team at The Voice is all it took for Sunidhi to channel her inner goofiness. Looks like the team has quite the mentor here.

Looks like junior Narayan shares quite the bond with Sunidhi and we’re completely adoring it.

Rumoured to have lost incredible weight for her latest TV appearance, Sunidhi has also managed to go in for a very glamorous image this time. After all what says superstar like blowing away kisses?

An after party selfie with the love of her life.

Posing away for some personal paparazzi, we assume.

Almost a size zero look and completely red carpet ready and worthy. What’s not to love?

Always brining her daily life to the frame, Sunidhi shows us she is a fitness freak and is pro protein shakes.

Giving us a peek-a-boo of her shoot life.

Wishing her fans a Merry Christmas wearing this Santa hat. So festive.

A fun-loving selfie with musician-composer Shekhar Ravjiani.

Going desi with this black saree look. Looks like the glam squad isn’t too far behind.

And lastly, right from the studios, doing what she does best.

Deconstructing Shaandaar’s Style

So far, we’re loving everything about Shaandaar – Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the dreamy sequences, the overall cuteness, the storyline, the music and the fashion. Yup, we said fashion, and we mean it. When the lead stars of a film are so super hot, we’re bound to see some very awesome styles. Right from the first look pictures to the trailer, we’ve loved everything that we’ve seen on Shahid and Alia (and this includes what the duo wore for the trailer’s launch event).

Keeping in line with the overall feel of Shaandaar, the clothes that we see the couple sporting are fun, quirky and super stylish. If they were looking to make a statement with their style in the film, all we can say is – mission accomplished!

image1 (2)

image2 (2)

You see how effortlessly fashionable Sasha and Alia look? Distressed jeans and bracelets for the win! Can we just take a moment here to drool over Shahid’s stubble?

We’re totally digging the black leather jacket on Sasha. So macho, so hot, so perfect with the stubble (men, are you listening?). This jacket makes quite a few appearances in the trailer as well, so we’re guessing this is our hero’s favourite or lucky jacket, or both.

image5

image6

We’re also loving Alia’s gorgeous tresses here. In the posters as well as the trailer, the gorgeous girl’s hair is left open and is in soft curls. Her makeup is minimal and she looks like an absolutely princess.

image7

Speaking of Alia looking like a princess, have you seen what she wore for the trailer launch? See, see (make sure you hit ‘play’)

Look at her twirl!

The Bhatt girl wore a colourful dress by Gauri and Nainika and paired it with a white cuff and pink sandals. She seemed to be having fun with the peek-a-boo dress (because Alia has fun with everything, just like her character in Shaandaar).

And what did Shaandaar‘s JJ wear? He kept it simple yet stylish (there’s that stubble again *sigh*)

image2 (1)

Although a lot has already been said about Alia’s pink bikini, we totally cannot leave that out. It’s chic, it’s gorgeous, it’s stylish and we can’t take our eyes off it. Trust Alia to pull a teeny-weeny pink bikini off with total panache.

image11

Even Shahid’s jaw dropped (in the trailer, Mira, in the trailer!). Proof:

image10

While Shaandaar is all fun and games for most part, there are times when the tone has turned formal. How have Bollywood’s latest sweethearts managed that? Fabulously, of course!

When talking business (and being all good boy), Shahid is seen in nicely cut suits, well fitted shirts and slim ties.

image3

image4

Also, the typical English sweaters are making an appearance (#love and #lust)

image8

We fell in love with that one glimpse of the formal Alia we got in the trailer. Hair pulled back and dressed in what seems to be a low-cut frock (it’s a formal dance!), the girl looks gorgeous. The dark eyes are not to be missed!

image9

Most of the clothes and accessories that we’ve seen so far have made it to our ‘must buy’ list. The film is set to release on October 22 and our list is set to get longer (much longer!). So very shaandaar!

When Sridevi Sizzled In Sarees

Think sexy onscreen saree routines and Mr. India’s Kaate Nahi Kat Te is one of the first images that pops to mind. That’s why we say that no one can do sarees like birthday girl Sridevi (yes, she’ll always be ‘girl’ to us, thank you very much).

Cuteness, elegance, baby doll charm and hotness rolled into one, Sri took one of India’s most popular and oft-repeated apparels and turned it around. Before Sri, we had Rekha who wore beautiful albeit super traditional (and we’re sorry to say but somewhat boring) sarees. Chandni changed sarees and made them totally 90s (and modern).

The sari trends that Sridevi started are still super popular. Let’s take a look at 5 times the South siren looked like a total saree-clad sex symbol onscreen.

Mr. India

Of course we had to start with this! Kaate Nahi Kat Te is a predecessor to Tip Tip Barsa Paani and all other rain dance sequences where the heroine is clad in a sheer saree. So hot, so glamorous, so totally sizzling! Who says blue is boring? It is sexy like hell when worn right!

image1 (2)

image2 (2)

Chandni

Hawaa Hawaii girl’s iconic ‘Chandni’ look completely overhauled fashion in North India (she was a Dilli girl, remember?). The demand for chiffon sarees had never been this high. It is hardly a surprise, actually. Who wouldn’t want to look like this?

image3 (2)

image4 (2)

Jaanbaaz

Sri’s role in Jaanbaaz was very short – one song and, maybe, 2 tiny scenes. For most actresses, it would have been a blink-and-miss role, something that the audiences would soon forget. But not for our birthday girl! She looked like a total diva in her super-fine white and red sarees (Can’t stop looking. Must copy!).

image5 (2)

image6 (1)

Lamhe

Thanks to Sridevi’s double role in Lamhe, we got to see her rock both Indian and Western apparel. She didn’t wear a lot of sarees in the film but the ones that she did managed to take our breath away, especially because her accessories were so spot-on.

image7 (1)

image8 (1)

Judaai

Designer sarees are very commonplace now, but when Judaai first opened in theatres, these were largely unheard of (or something reserved for only the ‘super rich’). One look at Sridevi and her georgette, satin and net sarees (after she transitioned to being rich in the film) and every woman wanted them. All we can say is – thank you!

Bollywood’s Ms. Twinkle Toes

Did you know that Vyjayanthimala Bali was the first South Indian (Tollywood? Kollywood?) actress to make it big in Bollywood. Yup, she was. Fondly referred to as “twinkle toes” (because she’s an awesome dancer, duh!), she was India cinema’s first female superstar and paved the way for other South Indian actress to try their luck in Bollywood.

Now, we all know that Vyjayanthimala is gorgeous and had a rather illustrious Bollywood career over the 1950s and 60s. Based on this, you would think that it’s difficult to pick out her best films, right? Nope! All you need to do is selected movies where she is paired with Dilip Kumar, her rumoured real-life lover, and you have definite winners.

It is said that after his very public breakup with Madhubala, Dilip Kumar had a fling with Vyjayanthimala. Although no one actually confirmed it, we see some great chemistry between the two (they were kind of like the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol of the 50s and 60s).

Let’s celebrate Vyjayanthimala’s birthday by revisiting 5 of her best films where she is seen opposite Kumar.

Devdas (1955)

Vyjayanthimala’s first film with Dilip Kumar and one of her best. The lady played Chandamukhi to Dilip’s Devdas and as much as we love Madhuri Dixit, our favourite Chandamukhi is Vyjayanthimala (sorry!). She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role (which she refused to accept because she believed that her role was parallel to that of Suchitra Sen who played Paro).

image1 (2)

Naya Daur (1957)

Vyjayanthimala replaced Madhubala in Naya Daur and the film went on to become one of her biggest and most successful films. This is also supposedly when Vyjayanthimala replaced Madhubala in Dilip Kumar’s life. If you’re going to watch just one film today from this list, let it be Naya Daur.

image2 (2)

Gunga Jumna (1961)

Produced by Dilip Kumar and largely considered a predecessor to classics like Deewaar and Trishul, Gunga Jumna is an iconic film that has gained a cult status. It has some of Bollywood’s most popular songs and a very pretty Vyjayanthimala who took home a Filmfare Best Actress Award that year. The magical screen presence of Dilip and Vyjayanthimala made Gunga Jumna an insane hit.

image3 (2)

Leader (1964)

An enjoyable entertainer where Vyjayanthimala played the role of ‘Princess Sunita’, Leader came at a time when Dilip Kumar had been advised against taking up emotional roles (by his doctors, nonetheless!). Yes, Leader is a comedy and if you haven’t watched it yet, you’re definitely missing out. Vyjayanthimala and Kumar’s comic timing is perfect.

image4 (2)

Sunghursh (1968)

When you bring megastars like Vyjayanthimala, Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar and Bajraj Sahni together, you get a classic like Sunghursh. Directed by Harman Singh Rawali, this is the last film where Kumar and Vyjayanthimala worked together. It was a huge critical and commercial success and earned Dilip the Filmfare Best Actor Award. Vyjayanthimala was conferred with the BFJA Best Actress Award.
