Johnny Lever really needs no introduction. India’s first standup comic and one of Hindi cinema’s comedians, Lever is a powerhouse of talent who just keeps getting better with age. As the legend turns 58 today, let’s look at nine of his super hilarious performances that never seem to get old (just like him!).
Baazigar
As the forgetful house help Babulal, Johnny was perfect. This was his breakthrough role in Bollywood and he was no longer an ignorable sidekick.
Karan Arjun
As Lenghaiya, Johnny had 2 tasks in the film – to help Karan and Arjun and to create mischief for Munshiji (played by Ashok Sharaf). The comedian’s pseudo-Parsi accent became a favourite of mimics of those days.
Raja Hindustani
By the time Raja Hindustani came, we were already aware of Lever’s talent. His act as ‘sardarji‘ Balvant Singh, who believes in doing the Bhangra at the drop of a hat, cemented his position as one of Hindi cinema’s best comedians.
Dulhe Raja
Manager Bankhey, forever getting his loyalties and responsibilities mixed up, is easily the most lovable character in Dulhe Raja (sorry Govinda!). This is definitely one of Johnny Lever’s best roles.
Baadshah
Baadshah Bhai‘s trusty sidekick and someone who ensures (well, tries his best to ensure) that no harm befalls his boss, Ram Lal is every detective’s dream assistant.
Hadh Kar Di Aapne
Lever had a double role in Hadh Kar Di Aapne. He played father and son, both lawyers and both with misplaced morals. Do we really need to elaborate on why this was awesome?
Judaai
Three words – Abba Dabba Jabba. Special shout-out to Upasna Singh.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Let’s face it K3G wouldn’t have been the same without Haldiram halwaai. Despite being around for a very short while, Johnny Lever was unforgettable in the film.
Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega
Was this a good and memorable film? That is a debatable question. What no one can dispute is the fact that Lever’s stint as film-crazy Aslam Bhai is wonderful.
