The Wardrobe Essentials You Must Invest In

It’s finally that time of the year when we witness the transition from sultry afternoons spent hunting for a coffee shop to escape the heat to cozying up in the comfort of your home while watching the rain pour down. Monsoons are rejuvenating and we wouldn’t trade that heavenly, earthy smell for anything! However, we’ll be bidding a familiar farewell to not only the summer season, but also summer fashion. In addition to the heat, there are a bunch of things on their way out – pristine white clothes, boyfriend denims, layered clothing and your trusted suede shoes. We, at BC, drafted up a list of au courant wardrobe staples for you to invest in, that will set the tone for your monsoon wardrobe without breaking the bank. As always, we turn to our Bollywood hotties to guide this shift in wardrobe.

Clothing

Colours: Dark hues like burgundy, brown and royal blue or a bright palette consisting of reds, greens and yellows. This is definitely the season to embrace bold and delightful prints.

1

“Alia Bhatt looks like her usual perky self in this vibrant Izzue strapless dress – so many adorable monsoon colors!”

Fabrics: Ideally, transparent plastic-like material like that of raincoats, to be worn over your outfit. There are a myriad of plastic ponchos available too! As for clothing itself, anything that’s light, doesn’t soak much water or shrink when in contact with water (linen, for example). Opt for gabardine, crepe silk and cotton-silk blended fabrics.

2

“Styling, silhouette and fabric are absolutely on point; patent leather shoes make the look perfect even for an outdoorsy event)”

Stay away from: Any garment that reaches your ankle, layered clothing, white or light-coloured clothing, heavy-knit sweaters, leather (refer to: that Friends episode with Ross’s leather pants), denims, tight clothing. Consider these options instead:

Tops/ Dresses

  • T-shirt dresses are the monsoon equivalent of summer dresses – they pass the “Marilyn test” of not flaring too much, are easy to style, figure-flattering and are the epitome of comfort. The world is your oyster when it comes to styling: go monochrome with a muted bag in a weather-compliant material and style your hair up in a messy bun because who wants to leave their hair open during monsoons anyway?

3

  • Make optimal use of your summer purchases by utilizing your tank tops and graphic tees. Ensure that you have t-shirts and shirts with varying sleeve-lengths. Instead of keeping it same ole’ by pairing them with shorts, team them with pencil, skater or A-line skirts to add a subtle hint of femininity to your outfit. Sonakshi Sinha’s sequined Dorothy Perkins skirt is tempered with a Forever 21 tee.

4

  • Carry either a muted trench coat, a pashmina, a light cardigan or jacket (preferably a waterproof one) with you all the time – while Anushka Sharma wears the trench coat by itself, you can wear it over your outfit if it gets a little chilly, or worse, protect yourself from splashes!

5

Bottoms

  • High-waisted shorts are a trendy pick, and denim is not your only option – these come in cutesy prints and delish fabrics. Shraddha Kapoor shows you how to don a pair of statement shorts. She teamed it with all-white on top but you can throw a pop of color through the tank top, blazer or shoes.

6

  • A necessary addition to make to your closets if you haven’t already, are culottes. These are subtly androgynous, often mid-cropped, come with a waist panel and flowing folds. Prachi Desai looks chic in this pair of pastel blue culottes.

7

  • Skorts, as the name suggest, are a combination of skirts and shorts; are a convenient option this monsoon. They’re comfy, colorful and a fabulous way to combat the rains. Take a look at this romper that has a skort-bottom that Yami Gautam wore for a Cornetto event.

8

Shoes

Needless to say, the season demands that you ditch the canvas and suede shoes. Swap those for easy-breezy flip flops or oxfords in patent leather, if it is slippery to walk around. For a dressier occasion, opt for heels in patent leather. Bata had launched a monsoon-special collection, check to see if you find something you fancy.

Accessories

  • A season synonymous with pops of colour, we definitely recommend a neon umbrella! If it is plain, use it as a canvas to make it your own through graffiti, writings or drawings!
  • If you’re a hoarder of designer bags, the only solution is an additional vinyl rain sleeve/ cover that your bag can go in.
  • Invest in a roomy weekender bag that can accommodate a change of clothes, an umbrella, a pair of shoes and your essentials.

For the most part, keep it minimal, airy and classy. Don’t layer too much or weigh your look down (quite literally) with denims or thick material. The vastness and versatility of fashion that is available to you will most certainly ensure that this monsoon is as invigorating as your chai!
