If Dibakar Banerjee is the current toast of Bollywood, there is someone else whom we should really focus on. Shoojit Sircar. Unlike Dibakar, Sircar’s debut was not that memorable. Yaahan, made on the Kashmir issue, though noble in its attempt lost out because of some unforeseeable problems like a very regular movie that failed to capture the conflict in Kashmir, becoming another Bollywood relic, with a generic denouement.
But it was with the super-awesome, smart, witty and charming Vicky Donor, did Shoojit Sircar become the darling of Bollywood. Vicky Donor was an extremely smart tale weaved around the theme of sperm donation, infertility and other relevant social issues like Bengali-Punjabi marriages. Vicky Donor turned out to be a surprise hit and not only this Ayushmann Khurana got his foothold in Bollywood and the biggest upset was that apart from being praised for his role, he also managed to win the Best Male Playback Singer a Filmfare Award. Vicky Donor was energetic and Shoojit Sircar’s deft handling of a touchy issue with memorable characters was a sure-shot winner and not only this, Annu Kapoor doing the role of Dr. Chadda actually outdid everyone in the movie even winning the National Award for Best Supporting Actor. Shoojit Sircar finally struck gold with his second movie.
After working with John Abraham as a producer in Vicky Donor, they teamed up for Madras Café with John Abraham playing lead role. Madras Café, was touted as one of the best spy thriller to come out of India in recent times. Instead of doing the regular routine of pitching off an Indian spy against his Pakistani counterpart and masalafying the entire story, Shoojit Sircar was gutsy enough to show the civil war in Sri Lanka and how India gets involved in the conflict. Not only this, the protagonist of the movie, played by John Abraham, as a spy working for RAW was very different than the one we are accustomed to see in Indian movies. He was a human made of flesh and blood, he is prone to errors, he is emotional and to top it all Madras Café was extremely realistic that won it solid applauds and Shoojit Sircar was lavished praise for outdoing himself in this third venture. He was finally a director with whom top talents would work and this was evident when the trailer of Piku was released.
Piku is, of course, his dream project. It is about an eccentric family consisting of Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and a few more characters. As far as the trailer suggests, it is also about a journey that they take traveling from Delhi to Kolkata. What made the trailer really click is the promise that it is going to be a solid movie. This might be Shoojit’s Khosla Ka Ghosla. It is unfair to compare him with Dibakar Banerjee because they have a very different approach in their style of filmmaking but then we can’t really help it. Comparison to Dibakar is bound to happen because they are now among the best directors in Bollywood. But though their stories center on Delhi, Sircar tries to create a connection between Calcutta and Delhi, focusing on the Bengalis living in the capital city. Dibakar on the other hand, as he was born and brought up in Delhi, manages to get the entire Delhi-feel in his stories. But everyone needs an outlet, a voice, and Sircar has become a chronicler of sort for the domiciled as well as immigrant Bengalis in Delhi.
Two of his upcoming projects are the very exciting Agra Ka Daabra and 1911. While Agra ka Daabra re-unites him once again with Ayushmann Khurana, 1911 tells the story of the football club Mohunbagan and their historic win over an English club to win the IFA shield becoming the first Indian football club to do so. As Sircar said in a recent interview, this was his wedding gift to John Abraham who is known as a football enthusiast. Agra Ka Daabra has a very unique title and it might be another pleasant surprise from the house of Sircar. But rumours are Ayushmann Khurana is playing a tourist guide in the movie, so we can keep our fingers crossed hoping it is not another Suddh Desi Romance.
Shoojit Sircar would have worked with Amitabh Bachchan in Shoebite but somehow the movie never materialized and Sircar moved on to other projects. Shoebite had Big B in the role of a man in his sixties out on journey of self-discovery. It was rather unfortunate that the movie never happened. But at least we are definitely glad that Piku is happening and the future looks exciting seeing that the projects Shoojit Sircar have undertaken are definitely offbeat and can once again set the box office on fire. More than setting the box office on fire, it is about the quality content that Shoojit Sircar is creating doing movies that are totally different from regular Bollywood fare. No wonder a Shoojit Sircar film always get the audience as well as the critic wondering what he is going to offer next.
