Being an actor and an actress in Bollywood as they say is quite the zameen-aasman ka farak. While the actors who’re way past 40 continue playing college students, the actresses in the same age bracket are given mommy roles to do. It is quite unfair; Hollywood has some great roles for older actresses like Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren as they have for the older actors but Bollywood is far, far behind when it comes to gender equality. So here are just a few differences about being an actor and an actress in Bollywood.
Wage Equality
The top Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor still get paid much lesser than their contemporaries like Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor even if they have garnered more hits than them. This practice is rampant world over but we are really hoping that things change soon in Bollywood.
Roles Offered
Past a certain age, actresses are offered older roles while the Khans who are in the 40s to late 40s still command lead romantic roles. These older actresses are forced to leave the limelight while actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth still have a steady stream of cinegoers coming to watch them.
Relationship Status
The marriage of an actress is supposed to signify the death of her career, hence, yesteryear actresses always get their marriage and relationships a secret. Although that has significantly changed and a lot of actresses are working post-marriage, not as many roles are written for them.
Profit Sharing
Nowadays most of the top male actors are taking cuts from the profits of the film instead of demanding a high remuneration package but actresses sharing profits is unheard of. Rumour has it that Kajol will be taking a share of the profits for her new film that will be co-produced by her husband Ajay Devgn.
They Are Routinely Objectified
Remember the TOI and Deepika Padukone controversy?!? We don’t ever recall a male star’s anatomy being used as entertainment to drive eyeballs.
