Bollywood’s Unconventional Relationships

Bollywood has always been ahead of its time and nowhere is this more apparent than in areas of love and relationships. While a couple cohabiting before marriage may be taboo in the conservative Indian society, in Bollywood it’s no big deal.

Many popular Bollywood stars – of the past and the present – have been in live-in relationships without raising any eyebrows. Most of them lived their lives openly and even happily talked about it.

While some of those couples have parted ways since and others have ended up as man and wife, here’s looking at Bollywood’s 5 Bindaas Couples.

Abhay Deol-Preeti Desai

The Dev.D star had no hesitation whatsoever in persuading his long-time girlfriend Preeti to move in with him at his Juhu pad. Though Abhay hails from the orthodox Deol clan his personal views about love and life are modern. On a popular TV chat show , Abhay declared his preference for a live-in arrangement over marriage. “Marriage is a cultural thing,” he said. “It’s my opinion that nature doesn’t tell someone to get married. I may or may not get married but I’ll settle down in a live-in.”

Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor

Before they got married, Bollywood’s power couple were rooming together for over five years. None of their families had any issue. At that point, Bebo had asserted boldly, “I’ve been with Saif for five-and-a-half years, and we are perhaps the first in the industry to have a live-in relationship and be open about it.”

Interestingly, Saif’s sister Soha Ali Khan, too, was in a live-in relationship with Kunal Khemu before tying the knot.

John Abraham-Bipasha Basu

They are no longer together but in happier times, John and Bips were H-O-T. They moved in together and it seems both the families became quite fond of the couple. While Bips considered John’s family as hers, John was treated like a son in the Basu household. Bipasha had famously said that she doesn’t give a damn about what the society thought of their cohabitation as an unmarried couple. “Society doesn’t matter. We are a married couple without being married. I feel like his wife and yet he’s not my husband.”

Ranvir Shorey-Konkona Sen Sharma

They got married in 2010 and now, there’s buzz that they may be headed for a divorce. But their courtship years were spent in live-in. “Konkona stays with me at my apartment,” Ranvir had confirmed then. “We’ve been living in for some time. And, our love life is going just fine.”

Aamir Khan-Kiran Rao

In a decision that shocked many, Aamir Khan had left his first wife Reena and kids to move in with the-then girlfriend Kiran Rao. After a year-and-half of living in, they decided to get married. Though at first, Kiran wasn’t too keen on settling down, as she pointed out, “I wasn’t sure of anything until we started living together. But, I was in love with him since late 2003. The more time we spent together the more I realised that we connected on an intrinsic level. We have the same ethical and value system. That made me comfortable.”

Aamir felt the same: “I started getting serious about her (only) when I asked her to move in.”
