In a candid interview with a leading daily, Sanjay Leela Bhansali talks about his early life, his struggling years and about his friends in the industry. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was not always the influential director that he is now. He became this through years of dedication, hard work and giving everything in his life to his work.
It was Vidhu Vinod Chopra who taught him film-making and made him the way he is now. When asked about his actor-friends in the industry, SLB says “They come and go and all the relationships are transitory and transactional. But I would call Salman and Rani my friends. They have been people I have been closest to and have loved immensely. I realise that I don’t want anything from them and nor do they.”
About Salman Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is of the opinion that the man is like a fakir who lives a simple life. “Sajid and Farah Khan had talked to him about me being this struggling director during Khamoshi when I first went to meet him at Filmistan. It was my birthday and he made me wait for six hours. But surprisingly, when he saw me, he said, ‘I know you. We have some karmic connection.’ He was a good man and cared for small things, but tried to be a brat. Rani lives for her parents and people she loves and is very expressive. They both gave me a lot of belief in myself,” said Bhansali.
Bhansali’s next film, the much awaited Ram Leela releases on November 15th.
