Legendary playback singer Manna Dey, whose beautiful voice left a mark in the hearts of millions of his fans all over the world for decades, is no more amongst us. The legendary actor recently passed away at a hospital in Bangalore on Thursday. He was 94!
Manna Dey died of a cardiac arrest at around 3.50 am. The singer was indergoing a treatment at Narayana Hrudayalaya. Dey has been suffering with respiratory illness and renal failure and had to visit hospital very frequently in the past few months.
Dey, who was born on May 1, 1919 in Calcutta as Prabodh Chandra Dey made his debut as a playback singer in the movie Tamanna in the year 1942. He has sang over 4000 songs in many different languages like Hindi, Bengali and Assamese
The Indian government too recognised the immense talent in him and honoured him with the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. His popular songs include ‘Zindagi Kaise Hai Paheli’, ‘Ami Je jalsaghare’, ‘Hoyto Tomari Jonyo’ and ‘Coffee Houser Shei adda ta aj ar nei’. He is survived by his two daughters.
Many believed that Manna Dey didn’t get the fame which he deserved. So what if, he couldn’t become as famous as Raj Kapoor or Uttam, he managed to remain a focal point for all the singers who looked up to him for inspiration.
