Sunil Shetty’s (Unintentionally) Funny Acts

When Sunil Shetty first came to Bollywood, he was largely written off by critics. This was mostly because he wasn’t good looking in the conventional sense of the word (mean!). But the actor shut everyone up real soon and became one of B-Town’s most sought after action heroes of the 90s.

Over the years, Anna has given us some wonderful(ly hammy) performances. On his birthday today, we’ve picked out 7 that we absolutely love. Take a look:

Pehchaan (1993)

Anna had a complicated role in Pehchaan (his third film, btw). He played a grey character – someone who tries to sabotage some relationships while trying to save some others, someone who loves unconditionally but is very ruthless at the same time. How did he manage it? By beautifully hamming it out throughout the film.

Our favourite part: This entire sequence – right from Shetty getting dressed to his threatening demeanour.

Raghuveer

This film had songs like Love Interview and O Jaaneman Chehra Tera, Anna beating up lots of bad guys and Anna romancing ShilpaShirodkar. Do we really need to say anything else?

Our favourite part: This song. You get to see Sunil Shetty dancing. ‘Nuff said!

Prithvi

If you want to see how SS reacts when you kidnap his wife, Prithvi is what you should see. Hint: He single handedly brings down an entire city.

Our favourite part: Just watch, please. We don’t know what to say here.

Bhai

A super hammy Sunil Shetty meets an equally hammy (albeit much younger) Kunal Kemmu and the result is a rags-to-riches story which turns into a revenge saga sometime during the second half. Fun to watch? Totally!

Our favourite part: The entire film. Can’t choose. It’s really that awesome if ham is what you’re looking for.

Dhadkan

Let’s face it – Dhadkan wouldn’t have been half as awesome as it is if it weren’t for Shetty and his “main tumhein bhool jaaun ye ho nahi sakta, aur tum mujhe bhool jao ye main hone nahi dunga“. The man took home a Filmfare Best Villain Award that year!

Our favourite part: This, of course!

Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani

Question: What do you get when you throw lots of actors (some popular and some obscure) in confused and confusing situations?

Answer: Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani.

Of course Sunil Shetty was a part of this. Of course he over-acted. Of course it was absolute fun!

Our favourite part: Can’t pick. Won’t pick.

Rudraksh

When Anna plays the Devil, quite literally, we are treated to a performance so awesomely OTT that we can’t help but watch it over and over.

Our favourite part: This face-off.
