Recent reports have suggested that Salman Khan’s emotional saga Bajrangi Bhaijaan is being showered with much love in Pakistan. Remember how audiences here were leaving theatres all teary eyed after a BB watch (Aamir Khan included)? The same is apparently happening in the neighbouring country too. Now that’s some feat!
While it is true that Bollywood movies are by-and-large banned in Pakistan, there have been films that have seen success and received appreciation from across the border.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
We’ve been watching Raj and Simran since 1995, but Pakistan has only recently fallen in love with them. Cinephiles there might have experienced the DDLJ magic after much delay but they have been moved just as much by Simran and Raj’s struggles and Babu ji’s “Jaa Simran, jee le apni zindagi“.
Dabangg
When it comes to Bhai and his fandom, no borders exist. Ek Tha Tiger was banned in Pakistan (and we hear that many were unhappy about it) but when Dabangg hit the theatres, it was loved, lauded, applauded, appreciated and everything in-between.
3 Idiots
This masterpiece by Rajkumar Hirani was so much fun that no one could say “no” to it. The audience loved it, of course, but we’re sure that even the super-serious and traditional members of the Pakistani censor board would’ve smiled when watching 3 Idiots.
Sholay
Cinema-goers in Pakistan had to wait a long, long time for Sholay, till 2015 to be specific (!). All the adulation and packed cinema halls made it all worth it though.
Devdas
Released alongside DDLJ, Devdas got an amazing response in Pak. It was loved by everyone and got the cash registers ringing like crazy. Both Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan have a huge fan-following in the country so that might have something to do with it (apart from the fact that Devdas is an awesome film!).
My Name is Khan
Not only was this SRK starrer a mega-hit in Pakistan, it broke quite a few records of Bollywood movies previously released in the country.
Kismat Konnection
Surprised? Shocked? Honestly, we were too. KK tanked real bad in India but it did well in Pakistan. Was it Atif Aslam’s songs? Shahid Kapoor dance? Vidya Balan’s good-looks? We don’t know. What do you think?
Taare Zameen Par
Education, learning and compassion have no borders, right? TZP proved that by becoming a blockbuster in Pakistan. Who wouldn’t fall in love with the adorable Ishaan Awasthi and his Ram Sir?
