In A Season Of Small Films, Will Margarita With A Straw Set The Box-Office On Fire?

Margarita-With-A-Straw

Margarita With A Straw starring Kalki Koechlin, Revathy and other relatively unknown faces, releases in a few days and although it has been lauded at many international film festivals, its fate in India hangs on tender hooks. Unlike commercial films with big budgets and popular stars in the lead that become box-office hits without a sensible script and acting, small-budget films have to rely on performance, script, word of mouth and sheer luck to do really well.

The last few years have had films like Bang Bang, Kick and the Dabaang series raking in more than 100 crores at the box-office. Panned by critics, these films have been a massive hit with the cine-goers. While small-budget films who don’t have a high marketing budget, still struggle to find distributors and audience to sell and see the film.

So can only the films with the Khans and Kapoor’s do well? With hits like Udaan, Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Kahaani in the past few years, this trend seems to be changing. There is a vast audience that likes their 3 hours of paisa-vasool entertainment but now their is an emerging audience that feels like films shouldn’t just consist of a few item numbers and stunts and content is king. A host of filmmakers are now taking a chance and making offbeat films like Stanley Ka Dabba and The Girl With The Yellow Boots for this evolved audience.

With films like Queen and The Lunchbox being critical as well as commercial hits of the last two years, we have some hope that there is a place in Bollywood for small-budget films to succeed.
