Despite the warning the filmmaker has received against releasing the biopic of Guru Nanak, Sikka is confident about his film
Harinder Singh Sikka is soon to release his maiden production and directorial venture, Nanak Shah Fakir . The film is a biopic on the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is the first ever attempt to capture the life and teachings of a Sikh Guru.
Though the film has received a lot of praise at the Cannes film Festival and the Sikh Film Festivals at Toronto and Los Angeles, it has offended certain members of the Sikh community who think that the film is blasphemous and against the belief system of the religion. Sikka even received a letter from the preseident of a radical Sikh group, Dal Khalsa, Kunwarpal Singh warning the filmmaker to not release the film.
In response to all protesters, Harinder has stated, “I am ready to show my film to anyone who has doubts but don’t make loud statements without watching it. There are calendars of Guru Nanak everywhere and there are films too. We have used animation to depict the Guru in the film. I have treated very cautiously.”
Talking about the film, Sikka told a leading daily, “The movie is about the message of Guru Nanak and it is told through the eyes of Mardana. I have overcome so many problems while making the movie. An attempt like this has been made for the first time in over 500 years and it talks about the teachings of Guru Nanak. Nobody reads books today, film was the best medium to spread his message.”
The film that features Arif Zakaria, Puneet Sikka, Anurag Arora and Shraddha Kaul in pivotal roles, is slated to release on April 17.
