They Made It On Their Own: 5 Actresses That Became Stars With No Filmy Connections

It’s well known that nepotism and Bollywood go hand in hand; an actor’s son or daughter is most likely to become an actor/actress. Sometimes we’re glad that this happens and we get to see an actress like Kajol and Kareena Kapoor or an actor like Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor emerge but then sometimes this fails and we curse this practise. But this Big Bad World of Bollywood is especially hard to navigate if you don’t have a Godfather backing you up. These brilliant actresses on our list made it big in Bollywood with their talent, grit and attitude.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra came into the industry after she won the Miss World competition in 2002. With no godfather or a big banner to launch her, Priyanka has made it big in Bollywood based on her professionalism and true talent. In 2004 she got her first hit in Aitraaz and post that, there has been no stopping her. She’s gone on to do superb films like Fashion, Barfi, Mary Kom, Kaminey and Saat Khoon Maaf. She was appointed UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador in 2010. Priyanka also did a collaboration with international artists like Pitbull and Will.I.Am on two hit singles. She now juggles a career between Mumbai and LA.

Vidya Balan

Vidya-Balan

In a male dominated industry, she’s been labelled as the only actor by her peers for the hits she rakes up as the only leading star in a film. Vidya’s brilliant filmography is a result of the diverse roles she takes up that are a far cry from just item numbers and pouting on screen. Vidya went from a role in Hum Paanch to bagging a lead in Parineeta when she was in her late twenties. This was after she was dropped from 13 films down south for being a jinx. Those filmmakers are definitely cursing their luck now. Vidya has been awarded the Padma Shri, has won one national award and four Filmfare awards for best actress for her role in Paa, Ishqiya, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani.

Deepika Padukone

It’s hard to imagine that Deepika is such a big star now with absolutely no godfather in the industry. Deepika got her big break in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om after she spotted her in a Kingfisher Calendar. Post that, she’s garnered hits like Cocktail, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Today she’s the top actress in Bollywood and even lambasted a leading daily for objectifying her in the name of entertainment.

Anushka Sharma

An army kid, Anushka Sharma made a debut in Aditya Chopra’s film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite SRK after being a model in Bangalore. The film didn’t do too well but she managed to sign a three film deal with YRF and in 2010 her film Band Baaja Baaraat did exceptionally well. The film was a critical and commercial hit and she was thrown into the limelight. 2015 seems like a good year for Anushka as she has quite a few interesting releases coming up.

Aishwarya Rai

This super talented actress has won two Best Actress Filmfare Awards, a Padma Shri, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the second-highest Order of France and been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. She was also the first Bollywood actress to get her own statue at London’s Madame Tussaud’s wax museum. With superb performances in Taal, Raincoat, Guru, Jodha Akbar, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Provoked, Aishwarya has proved that she’s not just a pretty face.
