As Sooraj Pancholi (Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab’s son) and Athiya Shetty (Sunil Shetty’s daughter) make their debut this year in Hero, they will join scores of other actors and actresses who have parents in the industry. Nepotism exists in every industry but Bollywood certainly takes the cake in this department. Almost 60-70 per cent of the entire industry is made up of filmy families and this is not including the people who have an aunt or an uncle etc in the industry. In the last few years, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra (sister of Priyanka Chopra), Shruti Hassan, Akshara Hassan, Sonakshi Sinha, Arjun Kapoor, Mohit Marwah, Shraddha Kapoor, Tiger Shroff have all made their debuts while Siddharth Malhotra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi and Rajkummar Rao have been the only notable ones in the last few years who didn’t belong to filmy families.
The Good
Sometimes it’s hard to curse the industry when you actually find superb actors like Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Aamir Khan who are just a few names in a list of actors who’re all children of well-known filmy families. They’ve proven their talent time and again and are some of the top stars in the film industry.
The Bad
The filmy child doesn’t find it hard to find an inroad into Bollywood as there is a godfather (most of the times it’s Salman bhai) or godmother in every nook and corner. Someone who isn’t from the industry would struggle for years before a decent break while a filmy child’s debut has most probably been decided when they were born. A non-filmy actor would have to go to film school, countless auditions, maybe face the casting couch, act in bit roles and still not be guaranteed a launch. Nawazuddin Siddiqui first appeared in a bit role in Sarfarosh and after numerous films found success in Kahaani and today is the most sought after actor. No one can guarantee a filmy child’s success because their future depends on their talent but their extended lifeline in the industry is no secret.
The Ugly
A famous surname relegates talent to the second position and these child stars have a horde of godfathers in the industry who will continue giving them second, third chances even if they don’t have an iota of talent like Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol. We’ve seen it before, kids of famous families sticking around way past their expiry date. Sigh, here is hoping that Bollywood wakes up to the fact that there are people who can act that don’t need a famous surname.
