They are the central characters of almost all daily soaps, but still are portrayed as this meek, damsels in distress, who can never speak up for themselves – and we’ve just had enough of that
On the occasion of Women’s Day, we thought of five gorgeous female characters from Indian daily soaps, who should speak their mind, take a stand and be a little more daring in life.
Kumkum Bhagya’s Pragya: The character of Pragya played by Sriti Jha is a beautiful person, who puts the whole world before herself. She takes everyone’s mean and harsh words, but never gives it back. There have been so many sequences in the show where she begs people not to misunderstand her, or begs to still stay with her husband, or pleads for her mother’s life. Abhi (Shabbir Ahluwalia) is undoubtedly her knight in shining armour, but it’s about time she shed this ‘bechari’ image of hers and does some saving on her own.
Satrangi Sasural’s Aarushi: She is a working woman who takes care of her entire family both monetarily and emotionally. The men in the family use her for money but don’t wish well for her. It’s about time she put her father and brother right. As for the seven mother-in-laws, it’s a fate any girl would be scared, especially when the MILs put you test at every step. I mean, who stops their daughter-in-law from entering the house right after the marriage? How many times should a girl prove that she is good and perfect for their son?
Saath Nibhana Saathiya’s Gopi: Ever since Gopi (Devoleena Bhattacharjee) got married in the Modi house; she has been put to test. Kokila (Rupal Patel) groomed her to be an ideal bahu, wife and mother. But all her life has been spent in making sacrifices for the family, keep them united and do all the household chores and in the end keep the husband and mother-in-law happy. If anything ever goes wrong, she gets blamed for it; without any explanations she is punished too. The show has taken several leaps, but Gopi’s fate never seems to have changed. It’s about time she lives for herself. When will she be her own priority?
Suhani Si Ek Ladki’s Suhani: She has a heart of gold and takes everyone by face value. She got married to someone who never loved her, but she accepted it as her fate. The elders of the house ridicule and humiliate her everyday because she is dark skinned, but she still doesn’t utter a word. She can see her so-called best friend trying to steal her husband, but she still stays mum. Frankly, her naivety is irritating. When will Suhani grow a brain and stand up for herself. The time has come and gone too.
Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar’s Ragini: She is strong, independent and has lived alone for 15 years. While we don’t know why she divorced Neil yet, it is obvious she is still in love with him. In spite of spending all her life to take care for her children, they still discredit her for the way she is. It’s high time she lives for herself, seeks her happiness, fights for her love. While it may be a difficult journey, there is just one life and if you don’t find happiness in that then there’s no point to living, right?
