Kangana Ranaut to star in Hansal Mehta’s Sarabjit biopic?

The talented actress is in talks with the veteran filmmaker, to play the role of Sarabjit’s sister

In 2013, Hansal Mehta came up with a film called Shahid,with Rajkummar Rao in the lead, based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi. This year, the ace filmmaker is coming up with a film called Aligarh, with Manoj Bajpayee in the lead, telling the story of a gay professor from Aligarh University. Known for making realsitic films, we hear Hansal Mehta has set his eyes on Sarabjit Singh’s life story as his next film.

A little birdie tells us that Kangana Ranaut is in talks with the director, as she is being considered to play Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, in the biopic. Sarabjit Singh was an Indian farmer who strayed across the border and was arrested by Pakistan government suspecting him to be a spy. Later he was sentenced to death by Pakistani Supreme Court, but in 2012 President Asif Ali Zardari commuted his sentence to life imprisonment, which is 14 years. As he had served his sentence in prison for 22 years, Sarabjit had to be released. But just days before his release, Pakistan decided to let go another Indian national Surjeet Singh instead of Sarabjit. Later Sarabjit was attacked in prison and Indian government pleaded its Pakistani counterpart to hand him back on humanitarian grounds for treatment. On May 1,2013, he breathed his last as he was declared brain dead and his body was flown back to India. All this while Dalbir Kaur struggled for the freedom of her brother.

Speaking to leading daily, Kangana said,”The role spans 16-46 years and is a challenge in itself. I myself share a close bond with my siblings. Rangoli is around four years older than me but there’s just a year and a half gap between me and my younger brother who is a pilot. We have grown up eating from each others plates so I can completely empathise with the relationship Dalbir and Sarabjit shared.”

If all goes well we might see Kangana fighting for justice in a hard hitting, intense Hansal Mehta film.
