Is Deepika Padukone Using Depression As Bait For Public Sympathy? Is It A Publicity Stunt?

Deepika Padukone Using Depression as publicity stunt

Earlier this year, Deepika Padukone came in for much praise for boldly revealing that she’s been battling clinical depression for some time now. She spoke about the pressures of depression – a state of mental conflict with oneself. She said that Bollywood stardom didn’t come easy. She had to give it her best to become unbreakable in tinsel town, but at the cost of her mental health. The harsh magnitude of maturity required to be an inflammable actress took a major toll on her emotional elasticity. Strict competition, heartbreaks, rumours and controversies amidst her dream to achieve success in Bollywood landed her in a state of mental exhaustion and depression.

Indian media has been going bonkers igniting the fire to this news, ever more, since Deepika’s admission. Watch Barkha Dutt’s special interview with DP, if you require any proof of how the media is going hammer and tongs about the issue. Agreed, Deepika Padukone was very brave to face this severe ordeal successfully. Also, she was one to understand that depression, even though a common condition prevalent in big cities, is an unspoken and unacceptable social taboo. She deserves a pat on the back to use her stardom to break the silence on depression in conservative Indian media. Not discounting the fact that being fearless and opportunistic to pick on this condition was a smart move by Deepika Padukone. It helped her become the dainty doll of Bollywood overnight. News of her being a calculating business woman, irascible boss and a diplomatic lover dusted itself into baseless rumours.

It seems as if the PR team of Ms Deepika is using this news as an opportunity to override her popularity among the masses – almost feeding on it to gain maximum sympathy support. Backing public support with a few hits this year, Deepika Padukone can become irreplaceable in Bollywood – a Phoenix of Bollywood. Yet again, recently, social media was abuzz with Deepika’s various statements: “My breath was shallow, I would sometimes gasp…” or “I faced the lights with darkness inside me”. Is her PR team using depression as bait to override on her own popularity? Maybe she thinks, “The more the sympathy, the more fixed my position in Bollywood.”

Deepika Padukone would be smarter to pick up quick points of ‘staying in the news for the right reasons’ from Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He’s not a headline-grabber but his intense struggle keeps him in the news. Maybe, he was depressed all through his 17-year struggle, but he made it big nevertheless, without making a hullabaloo about it.

The question is, is DP overdoing it? Truth is, work speaks for itself. The rest is just hype.
