With Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’s second trailer, focus has shifted from the unibrow-sporting lead actor of the film to the hooded villain. Yes, we know that Sushant Singh Rajput is going to be amazing as Baskhy Babu, but you have to admit that all the mystery around the film’s villain is making him the centre of all attention.
Dibakar Banerjee recently revealed that he wanted to cast Aamir Khan as the antagonist but the actor passed up the role in favour of Dhoom 3. Aamir or not, we have a feeling that Yang Guang could overshadow Byomkesh Bakshy.
Let’s look at some negative characters that managed to take the focus away from the male lead with their convincing performances:
Hrithik Roshan as Aryan – Dhoom 2
The second instalment in Dhoom franchise featured Hrithik as the suave baddie who was so good that we ended up rooting for him throughout the film. The (Indian) Greek God’s stunts, dance moves and sizzling chemistry with Aishwarya Rai were such a delight to watch that both Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra paled horribly in comparison.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Liak Tungrekar – Badlapur
Although touted as a game changer for Varun Dhawan (and for all the right reasons), Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur was more of a Nawazuddin film. The actor stole the show and made his presence felt with a performance so stunning that it was him, and not Varun, who left a lasting impression.
Emraan Hashmi as Shoaib Khan – Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai
Emraan’s character in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai was loosely based on Dawood Ibrahim. Also, he was the second lead. The lead protagonist of the film was Ajay Devgan who played a more loveable and fair Haji Mastan-ish role. In the end, however, it was Emraan who turned out to be the attention-grabber with his smashing dialogues and stellar portrayal of a grey character with more black than white.
Aamir Khan as Sahir Khan/Samar Khan in Dhoom 3
Aamir Khan played a good-guy-at-heart villain who just wanted to extract revenge on an evil bank. He was, nonetheless, a criminal and ACP Dixit (Abhishek) teamed up with Ali (Uday) to nab him. All in all, once again, Dixit and his side-kick were overshadowed by the bad guy. Aamir’s portrayal of a smooth and shrewd thief was so amazing that we didn’t want the good guys to win. And there were two Aamirs here!
