Did You Know SRK Turned Down Rang De Basanti? 5 Celebs Who Missed Out On Being Part Of Films That Became Classics

Actors reject roles all the time. It’s no big deal. In fact, it’s important for them to ensure that they are selecting the right roles and scripts. They can’t just keep saying ‘Yes’ to everything that comes their way. It is definitely a good career move. However, in their quest to choose only the best and most suited parts, celebrities, sometimes, end up making mistakes.

Here’s a list of 5 mainstream actors who turned down roles in some of Bollywood’s biggest films.

Shah Rukh Khan – Rang De Basanti

Shah-Rukh-Khan-–-Rang-De-Basanti

In 1993, Akshay’s loss was SRK’s gain, and in 2006, the latter’s loss was a huge gain for R. Madhavan. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra wanted to cast the King Khan as the Air Force Pilot in Rang De Basanti, but SRK outright refused to play second fiddle to Aamir. And thus, he missed out on playing an important character in a modern classic that will always be one of Bollywood’s top movies.

Saif Ali Khan – DDLJ

Saif-Ali-Khan-–-DDLJ Saif’s career has been quite shaky and it took very long for the audience and critics to notice him. Things, however, could have been different if Chhote Nawab hadn’t made one mistake – turning down the lead role in a film that created history. Raj’s part in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was initially offered to Saif, who turned it down for reasons best known to him. We’re sure that Saifu is regretting this one!

Rajesh Khanna – Mr India

Rajesh-Khanna-–-Mr-India The first superstar of Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna has played quite a few classic roles. He did, however, miss out on being a part of Mr India, one of our most iconic films. Shekhar Kapur had first approached Kaka with the offer to play the lead, but it seems that he couldn’t relate to an invisible hero. The role went to Anil Kapoor and Mr India went on to become a cult classic. It was a part of the ’100 Greatest Indian Films of All Time’ list released on the centenary of Bollywood.

Dilip Kumar – Sangam

Dilip-Kumar-–-Sangam Raj Kapoor’s Sangam was originally supposed to feature Dilip Kumar instead of Rajendra Kumar. When the actor was approached by Kapoor, he accepted on the condition that he be allowed to edit the film’s final copy. Known for being extremely finicky about his films, Raj Kapoor was never going to allow that. The role, thus, went to Jubilee Kumar, who delivered an outstanding performance.

Akshay Kumar – Baazigar

Actors Who Turned Down Legendary Roles --- Baazigar The 1993 Abbas-Mustan thriller is often considered Shah Rukh Khan’s breakthrough film. He bagged the Filmfare Best Actor award and the film was a box-office success. It is still considered one of the most intense psychological thrillers ever produced by Bollywood. However, SRK wasn’t the director duo’s first choice. The role was offered to Akshay Kumar, who turned it down because he was apprehensive about playing a predominately negative character.
