From being one of the most popular choreographers since the last three decades to attempting different forms of filmmaking like production and directing films, Ganesh Acharya has come a long way in Bollywood. Today, Ganesh is a name to reckon with for every young aspiring dancer who aims to become a successful choreographer. The multi-talented Acharya is all set to broaden his horizon and unleash his new side as performer – acting, with a full-fledged role in Hey Bro, produced by his wife Vidhi Acharya and directed by Ajay Chandok. In an exclusive conversation, the choreographer-producer-director and now actor discusses Hey Bro, special song featuring Bollywod superstars, Hey Bro sequel, directing more films, his journey so far and more. Over to GA.

Like choreographers-directors-actors – Farah Khan, Prabhu Dheva and Remo D’Souza, you’re also trying your luck in Bollywood and attempting different forms of filmmaking. How’s your journey been so far?

Happily struggling! I’m striving to do good things, something that will enhance my graph as an entertainer. I’m working on things on my own. So far things have turned out well and I hope it works out well in the future too.

You did Any Body Can Dance wherein you played a pivotal role but Hey Bro is your first full-fledged film as a hero. How has the experience been? What did you learn?

Honestly, I learned a lot while working on Hey Bro, be it comedy timing, action, emotion and the highs and lows of every nuance while being in front of the camera. Acting is unlike dance.

Tell us something about Hey Bro. How did it make grade for you?

The script of Hey Bro was brought to me by Ajay Chandok. He narrated me the script of Hey Bro which was quite similar to Judwaa and is the story of twin brothers. One weighs around 200 kilo and the other is 70 kilo. I was slightly reluctant but then Ajay explained how different Hey Bro is as compared to the twin stories that we have seen in Bollywood. So I agreed and decided to take the plunge. It’s a family entertainer full of emotions, action and comedy. Music is equally as good as the concept of the film. I’ve played negative characters in South films, which was well appreciated.

Do you think you’re the film’s USP and it’s riding on your broad shoulders?

I play a character and not the quintessential Hindi film hero. I played a cameo in Any Body Can Dance but I’ve tried to better my acting in Hey Bro. I’ve concentrated only on acting and the choreography department was taken care of by my assistants. The film’s USP is the concept, dance, music and performances. I play a good-for-nothing guy who is in search of his twin brother.

You directed two different genre films – Swami and Money Hain Toh Honey Hain earlier. Is there a plan to make more movies?

Yes, I want to make movies. But everything depends on the performance of Hey Bro. It’s in a way my debut film as an actor. Chhote packet mein bade budget ka kaam kiya hain. If the film does well, there are plans for the sequel too.

What genre excites you as a filmmaker?

I want to direct films which have a good commercial value and at the same time it should entertain people. Films are made to entertain, not bore. I hope Hey Bro works commercially well. I like big budget, commercial entertainers what Subhash Ghai, Indra Kumar and Rajkumar Hirani films are known for. I like to do films for masses. At the same time, I’m happy choreographing for films.

Has the industry’s perception towards you changed after you decided to become an actor?

Not at all. I’ve been fortunate that the industry people love me and have blessed me with their love and support. How else do you think superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Govinda and Ajay Devgn instantly agreed to shoot for a special song in the film? I feel I’m truly blessed and honoured. They love me, so they agreed to do the song.

As an actor who inspires you?

I’ve grown up watching The Amitabh Bachchan, so he’s my favourite. Then there are actors like Govinda, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn who are considered legends now. I’m thankful to Govinda as he agreed to do a cameo in Hey Bro.

Your wife Vidhi Acharya has turned producer with Hey Bro. how confident is she about her film’s hero?

I’m not blowing my own trumpet but the fact is that my wife Vidhi has handled the production part very well. She’s handled every small-small things with great finesse. The movie has got a good production value. Given the stipulated budget, she has managed to execute the project well and the film was shot in the scheduled number of days.

What sets you apart from Farah, Remo and Prabhu?

I don’t look at things like that. We all have worked hard to reach where we are today. Collectively, we all came together to make Bollywood’s first proper dance-based film ABCD.

What do you think about the BO fate of Hey Bro since it releases alongside Ab Tak Chhappan 2?

I don’t think there’s competition as both are different genre films. I want both the films to do well at the box office.

Choreographer, director, actor and producer. What’s left to do?

I want to see my banner becoming a successful proposition and a name to reckon with. To do that there are plans to make more films.
