The Indian Pop scene was pretty big in the 1990s and the early 2000s. It is, then, no surprise that some of the current Bollywood superstars like Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ayesha Takia started their careers with music videos. Wait, you’re surprised? You really didn’t notice them back then?

Let our list refresh your memory, or maybe you’ll learn something new!

Deepika Padukone

Let’s start with the reigning queen of Bollywood. Remember back when Himesh Reshammiya was a ‘Hindi-pop’ rage and the various versions of Naam Hai Tera were playing everywhere? That was when Deepika showed us her pretty face for the first time. She was featured in the Naam Hai Tera video. Farah Khan once said that she first noticed Deepika in the video and decided to sign her for an upcoming venture.

Riya Sen

Riya Sen comes from a strong filmy family. She is Suchitra Sen’s granddaughter, Moom Moon Sen’s daughter and a critically acclaimed actress in her own right. Before all that, however, she was a bubbly 16 year old dancing to Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi, a Falguni Pathak song that became an instant hit. Richa Pallod was also a part of the video but Riya was the star.

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid’s portrayal of a cute and clueless boy crushing on a pretty lady was so perfect that we watched the video for Aankhon Mein, a song by Aryans, over and over. Yes, he looks very different today and we can hardly believe that it is the same boy but he did get noticed, much more than Hrishita Bhatt who played his love interest.

Bipasha Basu

Most of us remember seeing Bipasha for the first time in Ajnabee or maybe even Jism, but she made her silver screen debut much before that. The bong bombshell was first seen in the video for Sonu Nigam’s pop song Tu, and she turned quite a few heads.

John Abraham

When we think of John’s first appearance, we’re once again reminded of Jism, and while that is true in terms of his Bollywood debut, Bipasha’s ex-beau also started his on-screen career with a music video. After a successful stint as a ramp model, John was featured in the video for Jazzy B’s Surma. He then went on to be featured in quite a few music videos, the most prominent being Pankaj Udhas’s Yun Mere Khat Ka Jawab Aaya.

Ayesha Takia

The ‘Complan Girl’ was only 15 when she made her music video debut. Ayesha was seen alongside Trisha Krishnan and Santino Morea (Dino Morea’s brother) in the video for Falguni Pathak’s Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaaye. We should really thank Falguni one of these days for launching such pretty and talented ladies!
