Darling movie review: Bala Saravanan steals the thunder from GV Prakash Kumar, Nikki Galrani, Karunas in this Tamil horror comedy!

This young music director turning actor has been in the news for a while now

A R Rahman’s nephew has started 2015 with a bang with the release of his debut film, Darling. A remake of the 2013 super-hit Telugu film, Prema Katha Chitram, this movie is a Tamil horror comedy.

What it’s about

Darling is a movie about a group of three people – Kathir, Nisha and Kumaran – who decide to commit suicide. Each of them has their own reasons for taking their lives but come together because of this one goal. The three decide to head to a beach house to commit suicide and on the way meet Athisaya Raj who also wants to take his life. The four end up at the beach house and what happens there forms the crux of the story. The four turn friends but then a spirit comes into their life through Nisha. How the spirit terrorises them and what they do to escape it is what the rest of the film is about.

What’s good

G. V. Prakash Kumar, Nikki Galrani, Karunas and Bala Saravanan play the four key roles in this film. GV has made a decent debut as the character suits him well – he plays the role of a young fun-loving college boy and later a morose one who wants to take his life. Nikki Glarani (whose sister is Kannada actress Sanjjanaa) has done a wonderful job though she’s just six films old. The highlight of the film would be Bala Saravanan who plays GV and Nikki’s friend. He has a great sense of comic timing and is a total laugh riot in the film. Karunas, of course, adds another comic element to Darling. The strength of the film would definitely be the comic dialogues.

GV has also scored the music for this film and the songs are pretty good. He has composed a range of tracks for this flick. The melodies like in most of GV’s films stand out. But Vandha Mala is a good listen too. Debutant director Sam Anton has done a good job.

What’s bad

There are not too many negatives in the film. Yes, the story may be clichéd and there’s not too much happening in terms of a story either. Of course, debutant GV needs to work a little on his acting especially in the scenes where he is scared – the fear doesn’t come through on his face. Some of the fight scenes could be edited tighter as well.

What to do

It’s one of the best Pongal releases this year and is thoroughly entertaining. It might not be a big-budget flick or starring A-listers, but that hardly matters because the story is engaging and fun. People may think it’s a horror film because of the posters but it’s more a comedy film with just a little horror thrown in. Produced by Geetha Arts and Studio Green, this movie is a sure winner! Go watch Darling!
