Veteran actor Saurabh Shukla, who played a self-styled god-man (fraud-man) in Rajkumar Hirani’s highest grosser PK, says that despite playing interesting characters all his life actors like him don’t get the deserving media attention. But he isn’t complaining!
Though it’s understood that the makers of PK didn’t want to disclose Saurabh’s role before the opening even after the film’s release only Aamir and Rajkumar Hirani spoke about its success – and not Saurabh, who had a relatively bigger role than Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani.
“That’s how it has always been,” says Saurabh, explaining, “I don’t feel ignored. We all know why and for what reason you get printed. Thankfully, I never had to approach anyone to write good things about me. If people like you approach me for interviews, I oblige. My four films – Fraud Saiyaan, Kaun Kitne Paani Mein, Jagga Jasoos and Aur Devdas will release this year but even when I didn’t have work, I never felt the need for a PR. There’s lot of plug articles happening of late and frankly, I find difficult to do all that.”
PK received a lot of flak from certain religious groups who protested against the film, but Saurabh feels all the controversy worked in the film’s favour. “I don’t know what was so objectionable. In fact, just two days back, I got a call from a close friend who stays in Banaras. He’s a staunch Hindu and follows Hindu rituals. He saw the film with his friends and called me up to say that he didn’t find anything objectionable whatsoever. Something similar happened during Jolly LLB when somebody filed a case against the makers as they felt the movie projected lawyers in a bad light.”
Personally, Saurabh feels these are exciting times for actors like him and his friend Manoj Bajpayee. They are getting their due lately. “That’s because the idiom of filmmaking has changed for the better,” laughs Shukla.
