One of television industry’s most shameful controversies happened last year when a rowdy man got on the stage of India’s Raw Star grand finale and slapped celebrity host Gauahar Khan right across her face.
It wasn’t just Gauahar who was visibly shaken by the incident, her fans across the world too were aghast in disbelief. The security personnel on the spot were accused but the culprit, Mohammad Akil Malik was held under police custody.
Gauahar came out after the incident to finish the taping of the show and later also held a press conference to show that such an incident can never bog down her spirit. I stood by Gauahar then. And I stand by Gauahar now as the attacker shamelessly accuses her of paying him to slap on stage for publicity. Here are three reasons why…
Firstly, I want to as Mr Akil Malik, what took him so long to come out and reveal the “truth” to the world? If Gauahar indeed was the one who paid him to slap her and it was all a publicity gimmick why did he wait for an entire month to tell his side of the story. Moreover, if his side of the story is true then earlier why did he say that it was Gauahar’s “skimpy outfits” that provoked him to inflict violence on her? If only Malik can join the dots for me I’d be able to understand why he is now victimizing himself.
Secondly, it is absolutely unimaginable for me to assume that a big star like Gauahar would have approached Akil Malik to plot such a low controversy! Ms Khan has won Bigg Boss, she has a successful Bollywood career, she has done films with Yashraj, she has a huge fan-base; she doesn’t need to resort to such cheap methods of garnering publicity?
Lastly, I think that the attacker is trying to milk every possible opportunity to be in the limelight and here is where it is media’s prerogative to not give him any more attention. if we give this guy more attention we’d walk right into the trap he has set to benefit out of the slapgate controversy.
And so I conclude my stand on the attacker’s allegations and also hope that during this time Gauahar holds her as elegantly as she did back in November 2014.
