SRK-Kajol’s iconic love story did more than just entertain
When Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released in 1995, it made every girl, including me, fall in love with Raj Malhotra- the quintessential lover boy played by Shah Rukh Khan. Right from flirting with Simran (Kajol) on the train to getting his bones broken in the climax, Raj did everything a girl would want her Mr Perfect to do for her. I, for one, was head over heels in love with Raj. In fact, my idea of a Perfect Man, till date, is largely inspired by Raj. And whether you admit it or not, I’m pretty sure yours is too.
So lets figure out what is about Raj that made me and am sure you fall in love with him as well..Read on…
Is fun-loving, musical, full-of-life…
You name it and he does it! Not just singing and dancing but Raj can sweep you off your feet with just one glance! Who wouldn’t be impressed by a man who can immaculately play the piano, followed by a melodious rendition of ‘Rukja e dil diwane’. Oh and not to forget, the famous mandolin that became his signature instrument on the poster. Raj’s effervescence is contagious and we are sure you got infected by it as well.
Is sensitive to your beliefs and values…
Though Raj is a big flirt, he doesn’t touch Simran when they spend the night together. No matter how many times I watch the movie, I end up smiling in a very Oh-my-God-he’s-so-cute kind of way each time I see this scene. Also the way he gels with her family back in Punjab, touching the elders’ feet, and showing respect to the values Simran’s family imbibes is exceptional. I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want to take home a guy who would bend just to take your parent blessings! Sigh!
Will sail the seven seas for you…
Even if you aren’t into Raj as much as I am, you’ve still got to be bowled over by a guy who travels all the way from London to Punjab in search of you. And this is despite knowing that the chances he’ll win you and your parents over are logically scarce. Now that’s true love! In an age where love thrives over random SMS’s and Facebook requests, this idea of an old age romance wanting to find his love across the seven seas is just goose bump inducing!
Will keep the legendary Karva Chauth…
Remember when Raj fasted all day with Simran without even telling her… he had every lady go gaga over him. Unknowingly he also set a pretty high bar for Indian men to follow suit and am sure some of you guys might be cursing him for that! Incidentally, Raj was the first ever celluloid male to have fasted for his love. Of course a lot of men on-screen have followed suit but none could match his impact.
Is ready to bleed for you…
It’s not just the cuteness and ‘we are in love’ moments that make Raj. When it comes to business and standing up for his love, Raj doesn’t flinch from his stand, even if that involves getting his bones broken and bleeding for Simran. The iconic climax scene shot on the railway station with Amrish Puri and his gang of goons beating up SRK stood out in my head even after the movie ended. I mean here is a man who can change in a split second the moment he realises his love is in danger! I reckon even Mills and Boons novels don’t have men with such traits!
I was fortunate enough to have found my Raj (minus the music and popularity) and I thank all heavens for that. But honestly tell me, don’t these traits form your list as well. Post in your comments below!
