The BIG PK Movie Review: Frankly, PK is just OK. It’s funny in parts, but COULD have been better

So, the wait is finally over! Rajkumar Hirani’s PK is out in cinemas. While Bollywood denizens and film buffs, especially Aamir Khan fans, are going gaga over Hirani’s new experiment on social networking sites, we wonder if the over-hyped film actually deserves that. We give you a lowdown on the highs and lows of the Aamir Khan-Anushka Sharma- Sanjay Dutt starrer.

PK VS OH! MY GOD

There’s no denying that Rajkumar Hirani is a brilliant storyteller and each of his films so far have appealed to every strata of the society. Moreover, all his films have had a social relevance, be it the Munnabhai series or 3 Idiots. PK is no exception. Considering that, Hirani’s latest presentation turns out to be quite preachy and draws a strong, uncanny resemblance to Umesh Shukla’s Oh! My God. While Paresh Rawal challenged god’s existence in OMG and fought against superstition and fake godmen, Aamir’s character PK is seen doing something similar as he challenges the godman Tapasvi (Saurabh Shukla) that sort of takes away the originality factor from P.K.

One big mumbo-jumbo

Looks like Rajkumar Hirani was sort of confused while writing PK. During the media interactions, Hirani had clearly mentioned about the fact that he and his co-writer Abhijat Joshi keep tweaking the screenplay till the last day of the film’s release in order to make it more interesting and entertaining. Hirani even made Aamir dub one line just a few days before the film’s release simply because he wasn’t too happy with the scene. In the same interaction, Hirani also admitted that the first rough draft of PK which he and his co-writer Abhijat Joshi wrote was something similar to Hollywood’s Inception on which they worked for almost a year and eventually scrapped it. While the first half focuses more on establishing Aamir’s character (spoilers ahead), who plays an alien, the narrative in the second half lost its way making one wonder whether Hirani got confused about what he wanted to say in the first place. Was the film about inter-religious marriage, atheism or superstition?

PERFORMANCES

As far as PK casting is concerned, Hirani must have browsed through the 3 Idiots diary or so we believe, as you could see familiar faces in PK – the prominent ones being Parikshit Sahni, Saurabh Shukla and the one who played Sharman Joshi’s mother in 3 Idiots (who plays Sahni’s wife). Hirani likes to repeat his actors. Not considering the film’s minor flaws, Aamir Khan as the loveable, entertaining and poker-faced PK steals the show. Anushka Sharma looks good with Aamir and the two A’s form a good chemistry. Sanjay Dutt shines in the cameo as the owner of Bhairav Band and is quite entertaining, especially in the song, Tharki chokro.

Interestingly, Saurabh Shukla, who played an astrologer in Lage Raho Munnabhai, plays the fake godman in PK and he’s superlative. Hirani’s close friend, Boman Irani, as the head of a news channel brings the house down.

PK SEQUEL ON THE CARDS?

The shocking entry of Ranbir Kapoor in the climax sequence gives us a hint about Hirani actually contemplating making a sequel of PK. Interestingly, RK Junior has agreed to do Sanjay Dutt’s biopic directed by Hirani.

WILL PK CREATE A NEW BOX-OFFICE RECORD?

Considering the hiked ticket prices, massive release and good promotions, PK is certainly going to bring in a good number of footfalls. And it will certainly get the box-office cash registers ringing but will it break Aamir and Hirani’s record of 3 Idiots or for that matter even Aamir’s last release, Dhoom 3? Though trade pundits are quite hopeful, they suggest it’s too early to say.

REPEAT VALUE LIKE 3 IDIOTS & MUNNABHAI

The USP of every Rajkumar Hirani film, besides the story and screenplay, is the repeat value. The goodwill of Hirani and Aamir’s star power will help tremendously. However, the lack of repeat value, limited appeal for the masses and poor second half might affect the film in the long run.

With the bar that Hirani has set so high, you expect a little more from him.

BC VERDICT

Three stars
