Some distributors have claimed to have suffered huge losses, thanks to excessive hype surrounding Lingaa
After Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan box office debacle, all eyes were on his next film with ace filmmaker KS Ravikumar. Releasing on superstar’s birthday, Lingaa was expected to storm the box office. With stellar star cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Anushka Shetty and Santhanam, the film was expected to work wonders at box office, wiping all the bad memories of Kochadaiiyaan‘s failure. And as expected, Lingaa rocked the big screen, with positive reviews flooding from all corners. In fact the film was stated to have crossed Rs 100 crore in 3 days, becoming the first Tamil film to do so.
But 10 days after its release, the distributors of the film seem to have a different story to tell. In a shocking video on YouTube, a distributor claimed that Lingaa was a disaster of epic proportions at box office and he, including several other distributors, has lost a huge sum due to Lingaa’s poor performance. In fact, the distributor went on to say that Thalaivar’s film has failed to collect even 20% of their investment. The buzz in the industry is that Lingaa’s poor showing after the opening weekend is due to the half-yearly examinations that were being held in the state of Tamil Nadu.
This makes us wonder if the box office figure of Rs 100 crore is inflated by the makers. One of the producers of Lingaa, T Siva clarified,” The rumours about Lingaa‘s poor Box office collections are false. We agree that the film’s earnings were affected a little by film’s wide release in over 600 theatres in the state and of course the half-yearly examinations in schools. We have reduced the number of screens and now since the exams are over, we assure that Lingaa would pick up its business. The film has been getting positive reviews and is being loved by family audiences.”
With distributors coming to the fore demanding compensation for their losses, it makes us wonder if Rajinikanth’s Lingaa is really a big hit as projected by the makers in the media or not.
