He came, he saw and he conquered. Maratha Mandir, the iconic single screen behemoth in central Mumbai, was decked up like a bride on Dec. 12 and Shah Rukh Khan played the perfect groom whose charm radiated all around bringing the theatre to a standstill.
A humungous crowd thronged the venue to get a glimpse of King Khan and the superstar sure didn’t disappoint his legion of fans.
Inside the theatre, SRK and Kajol spent a good half an hour regaling the audience with tales and dialogue from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
Our reporter who was there – “witnessing history,” as he calls it – picks his 10 favourite moments from the event.
Lively SRK and Coy Kajol
SRK was his usual self. Bursting with infectious energy, the man did all the talking, singing and dancing. Kajol who was in crutches (she has hurt her toe) played a passive spectator, effectively allowing the more eloquent SRK to steal the limelight.
SRK woos Kajol
SRK worked his irresistible charm by mouthing a few popular dialogue from DDLJ. But the one that got maximum applause was when he innocently asked Kajol, “Mujhse pyaar karti ho?”
SRK can’t sing
One of the rare things that Shah Rukh can’t do is sing. The superstar tried singing a few lines of Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam but his voice croaked off midway, making him change his mind. “I will stick to saying dialogue,” quipped SRK.
Want to flirt like SRK? Read his words of wisdom
Ever wanted to know why SRK and his flirting ways find favour with most women? It’s because he respects and honours every woman he meets. “Nowhere in your life should you disrespect a woman. You can love, romance and be naughty with women as long as you respect them and don’t misbehave with them. That’s my excuse for flirting with every woman I meet. You can go and tell a girl how attractive she is as long as you respect her. I tell this to my kids, too.”
DDLJ is all about Kajol
SRK went on to credit Kajol for being the central character of the movie. “When I heard the story, I knew it was a modern take on everything from love, relationship and marriage. But I also knew that it revolved around only one character. The film was about Simran and will always remain about Simran. And Kajol who played Simran is purity personified. The film’s purity comes from her.”
SRK praises Ajay Devgn
Ajay and SRK’s bitter rivalry that unfolded when their films, Son of Sardaar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan clashed at the box-office once threatened to derail SRK and Kajol’s friendship. Thankfully, things were back to being hunky-dory by the time Singham Returns released. SRK, yesterday praised Ajay Devgn and said he once aspired to be an action star like him.
SRK can’t be Action Jackson
Kajol praised SRK to the skies and said, “SRK is called the King, Badshah etc. I know the way he became a king. I have never seen anyone working so tirelessly. As much as fans love SRK, SRK loves you more. And he wants to be Action Jackson but he can’t be Jackson tonight.”
The Muslim angle
When Kajol told SRK that he has married multiple women onscreen by now in his career, SRK quipped, “I have that Muslim angle, so I can marry many times.” All in good spirit though.
SRK thanks directors Abbas Mastan and Rakesh Roshan
It was not just Aditya and Yash Chopra whom SRK thanked, but he also made it a point to remember his other directors like Abbas Mastan and Rakesh Roshan who gave him his career’s other big hits, Baazigar and Karan-Arjun respectively.
SRK doesn’t wear wig
Of the many qualities and virtues of SRK extolled by Kajol, the one that took the cake was Kajol saying SRK has real hair and he doesn’t wear a wig unlike many others.
