The Fantasy World of Bollywood Rom-Coms

Once they come of age, most girls discard their Barbie dolls and cuddly teddy bears and become obsessed with the magically romantic world of Mills & Boons. In India, Mills & Boons is basically Bollywood. M&B is hardly a patch on the reach of the fantasy that Bollywood peddles.

Many Indian girls have grown up watching romantic comedies and hoping, secretly, that a knight in shining armor will arrive some day to rescue them from their drab existence – a la Pretty Woman.

Whether you agree or not, most of our dreams and what we wish to be in life comes through Bollywood movies. It may sound like a common cliché but Bollywood dream merchants have taught us many things, including etching in our imagination a world where everything is as rosy as Yash Chopra’s picturesque mustard fields.

So, what exactly has Bollywood taught us? Take a look.

Prince Charming is on his way

Hold on to your horses because your Prince Charming is on his way to sweep you off your feet.

Example: Emraan Hashmi in Jannat. He arrives like a ray of sunshine to rescue our damsel in distress.

Chaand taare tod laaun

#2 To the moon and back.

Example: What better to explain this than Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani? Ranbir Kapoor wanders the world but comes home to see Deepika Padukone waiting for him.

Haven’t found Mr.Right? just run!!

#3 You are most likely to find the love of your life while you are running late to work/college/event/anything that’s really important. You will dash right into him and viola, you’ve met your Prince Charming.

Example: Simran meets Raj. Destiny? No, simply because she’s late for her Tour de Europe.

Maa babuji, ye hai mera pyaar

#4 When you get a fake fiancé to show off to family and friends, you will most likely fall in love with that fake fiancé. So chose wisely.

Example: Ek mai aur ek tu! Uh uh uh!

Mr Not-So-Right cheats on you

#5 You will realise a week before you wedding that the love of your life is a lying-cheating-good for nothing scoundrel.

Example: Ranbir Kapoor dumps Bipasha Basu in Bachna Ae Haseeno. Unforgivable. But there’s justice in the world. Bips gets even with RK in the end. Badlaa!

Stranger danger!

#6 Even though you are in a happy relationship, a guy at a party will see through the sadness in your eyes and remind you that you are missing a spark in life. He will eventually woo you.

Example: Sonam Kapoor is over the moon when she is with her fiancé in I Hate Luv Storys but there is something about Imran that ticks her off. In a nice way!

Who said money can’t buy happiness?

#7 Retail therapy is the best therapy to nurse a wounded heart. A chirpy song, endless trips to designer stores and many shopping bags later, you are a very happy person. Who’s picking the tab though?

Example: Sonam Kapoor in Aisha. She takes her less-fortunate friend (rather her next project) and they shop till they drop. But who pays for it all?

Time to pamper thy self!!

#8 A five-minute makeover will include the magical process of dry hair turning into amazing shiny hair with blonde/burgundy highlights. Pearly whites with a dazzling smile. Long arched eyebrows. A perfect figure. New-found confidence in killer heels. Cool attitude. More outgoing. Getting on top of a table and dancing your heart out. Last but not the least, perfect 20/20 vision!

Example : Amrita Rao in Main Hoon Na. The spoilt military brat undergoes a dream transformation from being a tomboy with long curly hair to a sexy maiden with poker straight hair! Uff!

Kis kis kisss se pyaar karun!

#9 A kiss is only passionate when it’s under a tree and if it’s pouring.

Example: Aashiqui 2! Any other kiss just can’t match.

Mai tumse nafrat karti hoon!

#10 Stupidest of all, but a surefire way to make a film work – love-hate relationship. You will start by hating the guy so much that you can murder him with bare hands unrepentantly and then, one piercing look in his eyes and you are falling for him.

Example: Bebo loathed Sallu bhai in Bodygaurd. But then – certainly, you don’t want us to tell you what happens next?
