Little did both producer-actor Shah Rukh Khan and director Farah Khan know that their much anticipated movie, Happy New Year would make it to the coveted Rs 100 crore club in just three days. The Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone-Abhishek Bachchan starrer earning Rs 100 crores at the box office isn’t surprising at all; what the makers and trade pundits were anxiously waiting to see was how soon it would touch the magical number and whether it would break Aamir Khan’s previous box office record of Dhoom:3. And it did just that!
Incidentally, the musical heist drama which is doing exceptionally well at the BO has now collected a whooping Rs 108 crores (India nett) in its opening weekend. On Friday, the film earned Rs 44.7 crores, Saturday Rs 29.5 crores and Sunday around Rs 33 crores beating Aamir Khan’s Dhoom:3 opening weekend collections and becoming Bollywood’s biggest weekend opener ever. As far as oversears collection is concerned, the Diwali release earned approximately Rs 50 crores plus making the gross total of Rs 150 crores – Rs 100 crores India nett collections and Rs 50 plus overseas. And we are still counting!
Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi who owns Rathi Group of Cinemas, says, “The collection of Happy New Year, including overseas, has surpassed everyone’s expectations and the credit goes to Yash Raj Films as their exemplary marketing and distribution work ensured an impressive nett collections not just in the country but also overseas. It was a carefully planned and strategised move by YRF, Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies team and the actors which has paid them rich dividends.”
“Every distributor and exhibitor is happy as the film continues to do phenomenal business. Most importantly, the audience, especially familes are walking in huge numbers to see the film who are also the target audience. It’s going to enjoy another two week as there’s absolutely no competition whatsoever with no big movie releasing this week till the Akshay Kumar starrer Shaukeen which releases on November 7,” Rathi adds.
