Amitabh Bachchan! Well, what can we say about him? Is there anything that you don’t already know about him? He isn’t just an actor. He’s a legend. His journey had its own share of ups and downs and every time he hit a low, he came back on top with full force.
Amitabh Bachchan is many things rolled into one. He’s a playback singer, TV presenter, film producer, one-time politician and also, the king of the audience’s hearts. He made his debut in Bollywood as a voice narrator in Bhuvan Shome. There was something about his deep voice – and still is. If he wouldn’t be an actor, he’d be a successful voice narrator.
Post his stint as a voice narrator, he made his acting debut with Saat Hindustani, dud to say the least. He was only a movie old but did not give up and worked harder and harder. As a struggler, he slept on Mumbai’s Marine Drive promenade. Big B is not a quitter. His fourth film, Anand was a hit. Now, it was probably because of Rajesh Khanna’s stardom but Bachchan got noticed and made his presence felt. Two movies later, he gave another hit in Guddi but his major breakthrough was Zanjeer as the angry cop Vijay. This is where he got the angry young man tag.
Amitabh Bachchan made the film and the film made him. He’d finally arrived!
Next up was Deewaar. It was yet another Vijay classic. After that, he tried different roles and worked with every actress and director. He flaunted his romantic side in movies like Silsila, Kabhi Kabhie and showed off his comic timing in Chupke Chupke and Amar Akbar Anthony.
In the 90s, Amitabh Bachchan went through a major meltdown when his company failed and his movies didn’t work. He kept coming back from his hiatus and gave us hits like Shahenshah and Hum but he wasn’t satisfied. In 2000, Amitabh Bachchan hosted the first season of KBC and life changed – both his, and ours.
Amitabh Bachchan is the star everyone aspires to be. We should be grateful of his presence in our midst. He’s cinema enduring gift to us.
