How would you describe success? Being popular? Fame and money and a crazy fan base? People extolling you to Goddess-level? People wanting to be like you? If that’s success, then Rekha has nailed it!
She might not know the President of the US (well, she might. You never know) but she does know how to charm her way into our lives. Scandals, controversies and affairs aside, she is one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood. If she were still game, she’d give Aishwaryas and Priyankas a run for their buck.
What’s remarkable about Rekha is the fact that she didn’t stop at anything. Many out there tried to pull her down. They disapproved of her and she got their approval by working hard. What’s more, the same detractors, after a point wanted to work with her. They taunted her for her looks. Ironically, today, the name Rekha is synonymous with grace and beauty. She was smirked upon – no thanks to her notorious affair with a much-married man. How times have changed. Today, women look up to her and commend her for staying strong and striking it solo in a male-dominated society.
She just doesn’t live – but enjoys her life. Dressed to perfection (mostly, glittering saris) you can’t spot any distress or sadness on her face. She survived and she did it all by herself. Without the help of any MAN.
We might sound like a feminist here but it doesn’t really matter because her strength is what every girl in this world should possess. Success won’t fetch you anything if you aren’t strong-headed and dedicated.
However great in their time, heroines are women after all and they often end up settling down in the role of a housewife or a woman of the house. Not Rekha. She will not settle for anything less. She didn’t fear anything and didn’t stop at anything. Though she was unlucky as far as her own ‘ghar’ was concerned, her role in Ghar was widely appreciated. Her other film, Umrao Jaan, remains an eternal classic.
Rekha did many such roles and was one of the best actresses of her time. She commands respect because she dresses like a mature woman. She got the trend of dark and heavy make up with khol-filled eyes and red lipsticks and made the look her ‘own’ for four decades. Her hard work, strength, will power and stability are traits that we admire. And, the evergreen actress continues to go from strength from strength. She turns 60 on Oct 10. Does she even look her age?
For Rekha, age – like achievements – is just a number.
