Actors first changed their names to change their onscreen image. And the trend continues…
Changing names in Bollywood has not been a new phenomenon. Right from actor Dilip Kumar whose real name is Muhammed Yusuf Khan to the very recent Tiger Shroff; many actors have changed their names. While some do it for spiritual reasons, others simply do it to grab attention. In fact there are some who just didn’t like their earlier name. In a recent interview with Tiger Shroff, Jackie Shroff’s beta had confessed that a numerologist had suggested him to change his name from Jai to Tiger. Tiger Shroff became a butt of jokes on social media all thanks to his name.While Tiger relishes his new found popularity, let’s look at our other Bollywood celebs that changed their real names in the past.
Sunny Leone – The former porn star was earlier called Karenjit Kaur Vohra. However, as the Jism 2 actor ventured into the porn industry she re named herself as Sunny Leone. Of course, the new name suited her new image. Needless to say the porn star turned Bollywood actor has earned enough popularity to her name, in porn films as well as in Bollywood. Meanwhile, try imagining a porn star with the her earlier name and we are sure you won’t be able to imagine a sexy seductress.
Akshay Kumar – The Holiday actor’s original name is Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia. Akki used to be a chef by profession. Indeed the name suited his previous profession. However, the Holiday actor changed his name to Akshay Kumar once he took up acting. While the actor was struggling to find his foothold in the industry, many had suggested the Special 26 actor to change his earlier name as it was rather ordinary and did not go with his acting profession. Well we can’t agree more, can you even imagine an action hero with the name Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia?
Ajay Devgn – Born to stunt master Veeru Devgn, the Singham Returns actor’s real name is Vishal Veeru Devgn. There is no clarity on why the actor changed his name. However Ajay as a name has surely worked for the actor, at least for his action hero image, right peeps?
Mallika Sherawat – The seductress garnered much attention with her first film Khwahish. Descending from Haryana, Mallika was initially working as an air hostess. Her real name was Reema Lamba. Considering there were other heroines in the industry with the same name, the Welcome actor decided to change her name to Mallika Sherawat.
John Abraham – It’s not a lesser known fact that the Jism actor didn’t like his Parsi name Farhan. The hunky actor’s father always referred to his son as John. While the Dostana actor didn’t approve of his earlier name, he was indeed in love with the name John. Itna hi nahi, when he ventured into modelling, the dashing actor preferred to introduce himself as John and not Farhan. Quite finicky John, we must admit.
Shilpa Shetty – Not many know that Shilpa’s real name was Ashwini Shetty. Considering Shilpa’s mother is quite spiritual, she got her name changed on the suggestion from a numerologist. We wonder why she kept this news under wraps for so long. Ashwini wasn’t bad either, what say Bollywoodlifers?
Rekha – The evergreen actor’s real name is Bhanurekha. Sources claim that she changed her name because people felt that her real name was very long and was difficult to remember. So to avoid confusion, the evergreen actor changed her name to Rekha.
Jiah Khan –The young actor had begun her filmi career with Ram Gopal Verma’s Nishabd. She committed suicide in June 2013. RGV’s muse is famously known as Jiah Khan however, her real name is Nafisa. The Housefull actor had changed her name back to Nafisa, though people still remember her as Jiah Khan.
