Why did Rani Mukerji opt for direction over acting?

The Aiyya actor will apparently direct a film for YRF

Recently married to the Yash Raj Films head honcho Rani Mukerji will reportedly be directing a film for her hubby’s production house. We wonder what made the Bong beauty shift from acting to direction…. Is it her drowning career as an actor or just a helping hand to beau Aditya Chopra?

The Chopra bahu who is known for her bossy behaviour was also in the news recently for directing orders on the sets of YRF production’s Mardaani in which she plays the main role. At many stages, Rani was apparently spotted calling the shots and taking all the production decisions. Since the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai actor is now a part of the YRF family, we now hear that Rani wants to direct a film.

However, the history of Bollywood suggests that female actors who have turned to direction have rather not been quite successful. Hema Malini in 1192 made Dil Aashna Hai with Shahrukh Khan, Amrita Singh, Jeetendra, Divya Bharati, Sonu Walia, Mithun Chakraborty and Dimple Kapadia. Despite this, the film tanked at the box office. The Sholay actor again donned the director’s hat in 2011 with Tell Me O Kkhuda, which also failed to make a stir at the box office. Additionally, actor Pooja Bhatt has made five films as a director since 2003 which also hasn’t fared very well in the number game. Other female actors as well like Nandita Das (Firaaq) and Soni Razdan (Nazar) failed to be successful as directors.

Rani, who is currently busy taking care of her father coz of his ill heath, should stick to the commercial concept of filmmaking and make a masala love story. May be, she can take some cue from her own love story, hai na peeps?
