This week two big films – Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Singh Saab The Great – are set to clash at the box office. But both should do well, since they are of different genres with different audiences…
Punit Malhotra’s Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (GTPM) starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Imran Khan is a light hearted romantic comedy, while Sunny Deol’s Singh Saab The Great is a typical maar-thaad action flick. Interestingly, Bebo and Imran are coming together for the second time in the same genre. Last year, the two tasted success with their romcom Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and we won’t be surprised if they receive the same response to GTPM. On the other hand, Sunny paaji is back to what he does best: action. And since all three stars have their own set of loyal fans, it should be easy for them to pull in the crowds at the theatres for their respective films.
Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi says, “The best thing about the two upcoming releases is that they don’t overlap each other’s target audience at all! While Singh Saab The Great is an out-an-out mass entertainer with appeal in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, Dharma Production’s GTPM will work in the urban centres and at the multiplexes primarily. Both Sunny Deol and Imran Khan are in avatars that have worked best for them in the past and should help the films do fine.”
While there may not be any competition between Singh Saab The Great and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein at the box office, considering they belong to diverse genres, Rathi points out. “The unfortunate thing about November has been the overflow of releases. In a market where the audience at large can’t conveniently afford to watch more than a couple of films in a month courtesy their budgeted disposable income levels, there has been too much clutter with each film being as appealing as the other.”
However, the two releases will surely affect Deepika Padukone’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and Hrithik Roshan’s superhero film Krrish 3’s collection. And though technically there is no battle between GTPM and Singh Saab The Great, we are eager to see if Kareena Kapoor’s tooh manages to beat Sunny’s dhai kilo ka haath in the numbers game.
