The dancing queen of Bollywood turns a year older today. She dances like there is no tomorrow. When she dances she makes us sway to her moves. It’s as if she started dancing when she was in her mothers’ womb, so perfect she is in this dance form. She has appeared in over 500 films. She is often cited as the most popular dancer of the item numbers in Bollywood. She turns 74 today, i.e. 21st of November. On this birthday of hers, lets us have a look at the best songs of Helen.
Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo
This classic song composed by OP Nayyar and sung by Geeta Dutt was Helen’s first hit in Bollywood and considered to be her ‘big break’. This one is from the black-and-white era. This is the first song in which Helen got a solo song to perform. Before this song she was a chorus dancer in many Hindi songs. Helen dances her heart-out in this one (not that she didn’t in others).
Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja
Piya Tu Ab To Aaja not only made Helen a cabaret star but also made Asha Bhosle the queen of cabaret songs. At the start of the song, the host introduces Helen as the most famous dancer of India as the one and the only one: Monica. So true. Composed by R.D. Burman and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri this song is ultra famous and a super hit, so much so that it was remade innumerable times.
Mehebooba Mehebooba
The song sung and composed by R.D. Burman is such a hit that even now many versions of it are earning from it. Firstly it was to sung by Aasha Bhosale but the song required higher nodes so R.D decided to sing this one by himself. But there is also another theory about the song. That it has been copied from an English song. The song being “Say You Love Me” compiled and sung by Demis Roussos. Watch that video as well and you decide if the song was “inspired” from it or was blatantly copied.
Yeh Mera Dil Pyaar Ka Deewana
Again an Aasha Bhosale song and this one got her a filmfare award. The cat-eyed look of Helen can kill! Kareena Kapoor tried her best to recreate the magic of this song in Farhan Akhtar’s remake of Don, which version do you guys prefer?
Oh Haseena Zulphon Wali
Two of the best dancers of their time, Shammi Kapoor and Helen came together for this smashing hit song. The song is great and that’s enough reason for the inclusion in this list, but there is one more thing in this song. The costume of Helen, especially the red one in the middle of the song is hot. Helen and Shammi definitely make for one of the best dance jodis’ ever.
Aao Na Gale Lago Na
This super hit song is from movie Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972), a love story, starring Rajesh Khanna, Tanuja, K.N.Singh, Helen, Sujit Kumar, Bindu, Sulochana and Utpal Dutt. How can the collaboration of Helen and Asha Bhosle not equal a super hit?
