Dev Anand’s Best Movies

Dharam Dev Piroshimal Anand, popularly known as Dev Anand is one of the most iconic figures in the Hindi-film industry. In a career that spanned almost 65 years, he acted in 114 films out of which 104 had him in the lead role. He also directed numerous movies, produced iconic movies like Guide, Kala Pani, etc. His versatility as an actor was recognized internationally and his numerous affairs with the leading actresses of the time were of much media interest too. On his birthday, Bollywood Celebden presents three of his best movies.


Kala Pani (1958)



In this 1958 movie produced by Dev Anand, he plays the role of a son who’s on a mission to clear his wrongfully imprisoned father’s name. His character Karan in the movie goes to any extent to make sure his father is out of the prison. This movie was based on the 1953 novel Beyond This Place by A. J. Cronin. His portrayal of the protagonist won him the Filmfare Award for the Best Actor.


Guide (1965)



This is perhaps the most iconic among all of Dev Anand’s films. Based on a novel by R. K. Narayan and produced by Dev Anand himself, this movie was India’s official entry into the Oscars that year. The National Award winning movie was also the first film to win all the 4 major awards (Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Movie) at the Filmfare awards. Dev Anand plays the role of a freelance tourist guide in the movie that the female lead falls in love with. The song Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai by Lata Mangeshkar is still one of the iconic songs.


Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971)



This movie is based on the Hippie culture of the 1970s. Dev Anand produced, directed and is the lead actor in this movie. It also stars Zeenat Aman. Aman plays the role of Jasbir who is a westernized hippie and a drug addict. Jasbir’s brother is Prashant (Dev Anand’s character) who is on a quest to find her. This movie with a tragic ending was like the launch-vehicle for Zeenat Aman’s character. She won the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress for her role in this movie.
