Tigmanshu Dhulia: Paan Singh Tomar was a game changer

Tigmanshu Dhulia, the highly determined director with a knack for making off-the-beat films, was not deterred when his initial movies like Haasil, Charas and Shagird didn’t become hits at the box office. He went on to make master-pieces like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar.

Talking about Paan Singh Tomar which got him a National Award, the director says “Paan Singh Tomar was a game changer for me. Things are way easier for me now.”

Dhulia, who grew up in Allahabad, says the rustic charm of small films is what motivates him to film in such locations- having filmed in the ravines of Chambal for Paan Singh Tomar and Ghaziabad for Shahgird. He admits that he does not have the knack of making films which require grand, exotic locations.

“I come from this kind of background and I know it well. To say that I will make a film like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, I will fail at it,” Dhulia told IANS in an exclusive interview.

Interestingly, his forthcoming film is also set in UP. Bullett Raja, that stars Saif Ali Khan, is set in Lucknow and is based on a fictitious mafia in Uttar Pradesh.
