The model-turned-actress Neetu Chandra made her Bollywood debut with the 2005 movie Garam Masala. She will soon be making her theater debut with the play Umrao Jaan; based on the novel Umrao Jaan Ada. She will essay the character of the iconic fictional courtesan Umrao Jaan.
The role was previously played by Rekha in the 1981 movie titled the same. The veteran actress won the National Award for her performance in the movie. Then in 2006, the movie was remade with Aishwarya Rai playing the role of the courtesan. This movie, directed by J.P.Dutta, was a major disaster.
Neetu, who is learning kathak and brushing up her Urdu diction for this role, said “I was very happy when I got this offer to play Umrao Jaan…I just grabbed it. My role is different from what Rekhaji and Aishwarya had played in their respective films as film and theatre are different mediums though the basic premise remains same.”
The play, directed by Hidayat Sami, will premier at Prithvi Theater in Mumbai on November 7th. We wonder how this will turn out to be.
