So many Bollywood horror movies have come and gone, but only few managed to get us jumping out of our seats in fright. This Halloween we came up with a list of films that actually deserved to be called ‘horror stories’
When it comes to horror films, Bollywood has come a long way. Haunted mansions, evil spirits, ghosts, witches and most recently, zombies – filmmakers have tried every formula they could imagine to scare their audiences to the edge of their seats. Sadly, not every production has had that special ‘boo’ factor. But Bollywood has indeed doled out some creepy movies that will give you goosebumps every time you watch them. If you really want to get into the true spirit of Halloween, take your pick….
Raaz : Though it’s an unofficial remake of the Hollywood film What Lies Beneath, director Vikram Bhatt provided some sensible chills. Malini Sharma, who played the evil spirit, created ripples with her slick performance. Overall the movie was shot well, with great sound effects that managed to spook audiences.
Bhoot : Ram Gopal Varma is the director with the most horror films to his name. And undoubtedly, Bhoot tops the list as his best film in this genre. While Urmila Matondkar’s acting is brilliant, we thought Rekha was equally scary, courtesy her witch avatar. Chilling sound effects, good lighting and great performances contributed to making this one an actually spooky film.
13 B : Very few Bollywood horror movies are devoid of clichĂ©s, but this isn’t one of them. Besides sounds effects, a gripping story and a taut plot are the USP of this R Madhavan starrer. If you love scary movies, this is one you don’t want to miss.
Phoonk : Varma’s Phoonk is about black magic, but that’s not why it is on our list. Watch it for ogling crows, out-of-focus soft toys, wooden artefacts, scary background music and, of course, Ashwini Kalsekar, whose charcoaled eyes will give you a serious case of the jitters.
Darna Mana Hai : Yet another attempt by RGV to scare the audience – and he does manage to succeed, to some extent. Six stories have been seamlessly blended into one plot. But what makes this film spooky is the camera work, sharp cuts and excellent background music.
Ragini MMS : Based on the concept of paranormal activity, Ragini MMS is inspired by a true story. The film is technically well shot, has chilling background music and does manage to send shivers down your spine. Watch this one for Kainaz Motivala – she goes crazy, is frustrated and terrified of being caught in an unnervingly crazy house with her boyfriend’s bleeding corpse for company.
1920 : Adah Sharma’s performance in this supernatural thriller by Vikram Bhatt will take you on a scary ride. The boo monster will send you into your blanket, though only during the climax.
Sangharsh : Technically – or in any other aspect – this isn’t a horror film. But we had to mention it because of Ashutosh Rana, who plays the baddie. Every time he came into the frame, he spooked us with his acting and bulgey-eyed look. The actor proved that you don’t need a ghost or spirit to scare the hell out of anyone!
