Bollywood has become a Swap-Shop?

There seems to be a trend now-a-days in Bollywood. Film-makers are often choosing one lead actress for a film and then they’re replacing her with someone else and at other times, actresses themselves are opting out of roles. It seems as if the top actresses of Bollywood are playing/are being made to play a game of musical chairs for the roles. It’s probably because of the fact that there are very few A-grade actresses now.

Sometimes the actresses are dropping out of projects, like Kareena Kapoor, who was the initial choice for the female lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. Kareena was apprehensive about the long duration of the shoot and left the project; paving way for her cousin’s ex Deepika Padukone; who handled the role really well (going by the trailer).

Also, Kangana Ranaut opted out of Dedh Ishqiya. She was reportedly offered an important role as Madhuri Dixit’s character’s best friend. The Fashion actress probably got cold-feet about acting with Madhuri and left the project. Huma Qureshi of Gangs of Wasseypur fame bagged the deal instead. Kangana in turn, replaced Chitrangada Singh in Krrish 3. Originally, Chitrangada Singh was supposed to play the role of a mutant but she opted out of it, citing some other commitments.

At other times, actresses have been replaced by the film-makers; sometimes because of their demands and sometimes because of the film-makers’ choice. For instance, Rani Mukerjee was supposed to play the role of the boxer Mary Kom, in the biopic. She demanded the director Omang Kumar to make some changes in the script. He just changed her. She was replaced by Priyanka Chopra.

Similarly, Asin was originally cast in the sequel to the movie Welcome. Titled Welcome Back, the movie is directed Anees Bameez and produced by Feroz Nadidawala. The director Anees, who directed Asin-Salman Khan starrer Ready, approached Asin once again. But the price she quoted for this film was way beyond their budget and Shruti Hassan ended up with the deal.
