AR Rahman’s first concert as a part of the ongoing India tour Rahamanishq, happened in Kolkata on Tuesday. The scores of fans, braved the heavy downpour and cheered him and sang along during his performance.
Accompanied by singers Javed Ali, Sukhwinder Singh, Hriday Gattani, Suchismita, Neeti Mohan, Harshdeep Kaur, Shweta Pandit among others, Rahman created his usual magic on stage and the crowd whistled and cheered constantly during the three hour concert at the Salt Lake Stadium.
The Acedemy Award winning musician took care not to be repetitive as he had already performed in the city a couple of years ago. He started off with a soulful rendition of Dil Se and went on.
One of the several highlights of the evening was his rendition of a Rabindranath Tagore’s poem ‘Where The Mind is Without Fear’. The art-loving Kolkata crowd listened with rapt attention as the maestro was singing the lines of the poem.
‘Jo Bhi Main’, ‘Katiya Karun’ from ‘Rockstar’, ‘Maiyya Maiyya’, ‘Tere Bina’ from ‘Guru’, ‘Yeh Jo Desh Hai Mera’ from ‘Swades’, ‘Jashn-e-Bahara’ from ‘Jodha Akhbar’ and ‘Jiya Re’ from ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ were the songs that got the maximum response.
The biggest highlight of the evening was perhaps the qawwali theme with Rahman and his ensemble attired in kurtas and headgear set the mood for a Sufi evening. The intro of ‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja’ from ‘Jodha Akhbar’ skillfully merged into ‘Kun Faya Kun’ from ‘Rockstar’.
The audience got an awesome finale with the ever-green Vande Mataram.
