Big Boss 5: Who is the boss among anchors, Sanjay Dutt or Salman Khan?

'Big Boss-5' was splashed all over the country side as a watershed in the history of Indian television as it was for the first time in the history of Indian cinema that two of the most prominent stars of Hindi cinema Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan were coming together to host the show in the fifth season of this reality show. Well, as the curtains were raised on the show, one thing that appeared as the prominent motif was the fact that Salman Khan has evolved as the consummate performer on the television screen while Sanjay Dutt had a sense of awkwardness when compared to Salman Khan. It could be owing to the fact that for Sanjay Dutt it is a maiden debut as an anchor while Salman Khan has had an experience of more than 3 years performing on television.

The publicity for this dual anchor 'Big Boss-5' was done using all the props and the mannerisms associated with MUNNABHAI where Sanjay Dutt was being positioned as a Munna. But Salman Khan has shown that he is not a Circuit, but is 'Chotta Munna' and has the ability to steal the scene. It could also be the fact that Sanjay Dutt displayed the awkwardness as he was performing live before an audience which he has rarely done, and as the season grows on Sanjay Dutt would also come into his element. Indeed, once he comes into his element, and with the sense of comedy timing that Salman Khan has, 'Big Boss Season-5' could catch the eyeballs in a big way. Indeed, it is the aspiration to catch the eyeballs in prime time slot that was the guiding factor for Colors to bring in two actors of the caliber of Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan to host the show.

One thing is for sure, the show in its fifth season would depend heavily on the performance of Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt to increase the TRPs as the guest list this time around is not that inspiring that would make an audience glued to its monitors views the antics. A Shakti Kapoor who is way past is prime dancing in the nada shorts, a USP of his acting career, now appears more of a caricature rather than as an element to trigger laughter and comedy.

Notion of reality shows as it has evolved in India is quite different from the reality shows that are aired in European countries where quotient of celebrity is not the guiding force for the TRP of the show. In India it is the participation of a celebrity that makes the reality shows like BIG BOSS an event to watch out for. Even a Big B could not sustain the momentum in KBC's latest avatar though the format of KBC was changed as the quotient of celebrity was not in the same proportion as it was during earlier times. So to make 'Big Boss' a success in the fifth season the makers of the show would have to either give more time to Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan to resort to their antics to glue the audience to the television screen, or bring in more celebrities eventually during the show. Either way, it could be a double edged sword, but who knows, with the immense goodwill that both of these actors have in the industry, and if they are able to bring their folks into the house, they could surely set the television screen on fire. Watch out for this space
