Much like her sister Priyanka Chopra, who learned the Manipuri way of talking in Hindi for the recently released biopic Mary Kom, Parineeti Chopra learnt to speak in the Dakhini dialect for her role as a Hyderabadi girl Gulrez in Habib Faisal’s Daawat-E-Ishq. And to help Parineeti to speak the dialect flawlessly in this Yash Raj production, Elahe Hiptoola (a producer mostly associated with Nagesh Kukunoor’s films) was roped in.
Parineeti says, “Elahe was a fantastic teacher so I enjoyed learning Dakhini.” Elahe is Hyderabad based – just like Daawat-E-Ishq. She has executive-produced Nagesh Kukunoor’s films like Hyderabad Blues 2, Iqbal and Dor; and though she has never been a language coach, Elahe sportingly agreed to come on board for Yash Raj Films.
This is Parineeti’s first instance in learning a new dialect but she feels ‘it wasn’t very difficult for me to pick up the language. I love languages. I love to observe how people talk. In real life also, I catch it when people talk differently. Besides, Dakhini is a very easy dialect to pick up.”
Regarding the process of preparing Chopra for the role, Hiptoola says the preparation was not limited only to the script. “We had readings of the script. I would read her part first and she would take notes of the stresses and lilt by writing them down in Devnagari and then she would repeat the line. I would give her certain passages from the script as ‘homework’ and we would read those the next day and make the necessary corrections. Also, the whole time when we were doing the readings, I conversed with Parineeti in Dakhani so it wasn’t limited to just her dialogue. This way she got used to hearing the language and its usage in normal everyday speak.”
Elahe points out there were a few key words that had to be spoken correctly. She elaborates: “Like ‘hau’ and ‘maaloom’ where the lilt would make all the difference. Moreover, Habib had me record all the dialogue in the entire script in a dubbing/Foley theatre so the actors (mostly Anupam Kher and Parineeti) who spoke Dakhini in the film would have an accent sample since I couldn’t commit much time to being on the set.”
Like a proud teacher, Hiptoola says, “Parineeti is one of the brightest people I know, in and out of our industry; and it was a lot of fun interacting with her.”
